Valid Complaint?

I doubt that Disney trains their people on what new coins are in circulation. In my opinion the blame is then on management rather than the CM.

She's right. I live in Delaware, about 30 minutes from Salisbury, MD-- PP's home town, and where I also work--and have never had any problem using $1 coins in any store or vending machine.

By the way, did you grow up in Salisbury, or move there? I graduated from Wi-Hi, and its nice to see a local on the board. Truly a small world!

:wave2: Hi Chuck!! I moved to Salisbury about 5 years ago, I grew up down the road in VA. Have worked at Coke for 10 years though!! :scared: And yes, it is cool to see someone local on the board! Hope to see you more often! :thumbsup2

**Oh and thanks for backing me up!! lol ;)

No problem- we Delmarva residents have to stick up for our own, right?:goodvibes

I'm not a fan of those dollar coins. I've been getting them in change more lately. I've been saving them to use for Toothfairy money for DD.

I've only read what happened to the OP. I can understand being annoyed about it. I know I wouldn't have expected someone to turn them down since I got them at the same park.

At this point, I think I would send a quick email to guest relations explaining what happened and let them know to notify all CM's that those are valid dollar coins so it won't happen to someone else. Maybe they'll actually spread the word and it won't happen to anyone else.

This would have irritated me as well. A couple of years ago, I left the bank with cash. Went across the street to Wendy's. Tried to pay with an "old" $100 bill. The kind before holograms and mulit colored ink. They wouldn't take it. Said it looked fake. The genius taking the orders, manager, all of them. So instead of giving them a newer bill, I just left and never went back. I don't tolerate "stupid" very well.

Oh, and btw CMs are required (at least when I was there) to accept bills that they know are counterfeit and not mention it to the guest. Disney's assumption is that the guest doesn't know it's counterfeit and they don't want you to make them uncomfortable. You're supposed to just keep the bill out, show it to a manager, and if it is counterfeit security is notified and they will be on the lookout for it happening again.

Interesting!

So not only did she not know a key component of her job (what money looks like), but she was going flat out against what might still be policy to take what you suspect is counterfeit?

I have never seen such an inconsequential event cause so much trauma to so many people. It's a dollar coin, people. And the guy who "just wanted to educate the poor girl" could make a point, sure. He could take 20 minutes out of his trip to whine to the poor girl about a dollar coin. He could take another 20 to whine to the manager who likely had never seen the coin either. And the whole tiime he was whining about it -- I'm sorry, EDUCATING HER -- the line for the ride or show or concession would just grow and grow and grow.

Unless this thread has been edited, there are TWO people whose words I have read that seem to be traumatized. Neither has been the OP. Both have been people vehemently against the OP's concern.

Helping an employee do their job better isn't a complaint. It's a help. And a help for people down the road.

Oh that's a good idea! That time is going to come up soonish for DS, I should have been keeping the ones I've been getting. Drat.

And I've gotten them quite a bit in the last year.

OP I think you should write a letter or email. After all, if you had not had that extra money in your wallet, this WOULD have been a problem, not just an inconvenience. I might not even put the CM's name, but just keep it general, or at least down to the store/restaurant. Obviously at least one person needs extra training, and I've found that when one person needs extra training, there are plenty of others who just haven't been noticed yet who also need it.

Sometimes you can take advantage of these situations to have a little fun.

I pumped a tankful of gas and went inside the station, where I picked out a soda and a bag of chips. I was told the station had a policy of a $5 minimum charge, to which I responded that I had a policy that I don't buy more stuff to comply with your policy.

The clerk had already rung up my items. So she went to void my purchase - and it all fell apart. She got the void wrong, there was a line of people behind me, I asked for a void receipt - all this shut down the whole station and now the pump credit card slots weren't working either. People were coming in mad - the line for sodas was now about 8 deep...

I just left as the clerk made a frantic call to the station owner. I felt bad for the clerk - but had fun with their policy.

We got a $1 coin while at Disney. I had to take a second glance at it myself, even though I am familiar to the $1 coin.

Obviously she didn't know what it was. Should she have? Maybe but she didn't. Compassion goes a long way if people learn to use it!

Makes you wonder what kids are learning these days. I went to a fast food joint and asked for a "couple" of sweetners for my iced tea. I was asked how many is that.:confused3:confused3:confused3:rolleyes1

wow, eleven pages on this? Is anyone else surprised that this would generate 11 pages?

Giventhe situation, I think I would have probably had a good laugh. I haven't read all 11 pages, but doesn't this strike anybody else as a funny situation?

Perhaps ) Maybe I'd have called a manager, maybe I would have trucked to another clerk, maybe I would have paid with the $100 and not given it another thought.

If your join date is Feb. 2005, how can you possibly be surprised this has gone to 11 pages? :rotfl:

Wow, I completely agree with summerlady. You should be ashamed of yourself. :sad2:

Same here. These things are all great things to do... letting this happen, not contacting a supervisor, then posting it on the DIS boards...

I mentioned this thread to my sister. She is a CM and a trainer for new CMs. She said that she was not surprised that the CM did not know what the coins were. If the girl was an ICP (International College Program) CM, they often don't know US money when they arrive. They have to learn US currency and how to make change the Disney way (yes, there is a special way they are supposed to give change) in a matter of two days training. The new coins have not been included in the training. Even if the girl was not an ICP, it is very possible that she had never seen the coin before. My sister said that she just heard in a meeting last week that they are supposed to start pushing the coins as change. Please realize that she is a trainer and therefore included in meetings that most CMs do not attend.

As far as she remembers, nothing was sent out to most CMs about the coins or Disney's involvement in trying to circulate them.

She also said that all the OP needed to do was ask to see a manager. The managers are always available to the guests. The manager would have explained to the CM about the coin. It would have been a win-win situation. The OP would have been able to use the coins and the CM would have learned a valuable piece of information. As it is, the OP is bent out of shape and the CM is still clueless. :confused3

a) it is against their agreements with credit card companies for merchants to require a minimum credit card purchase. It isn't a law, but they should not be doing that.
b) I just pumped $30 or $40 worth of gas outside using the same card - so now they refuse to process my $2.50 selection of soda and chips?
c) I was using the gas company card (a Sunoco card at a Sunoco station, if I recall). I know the cards are not administered by the same guy who owns the station - but would Sunoco be happy to hear a dealer is turning away a $2.50 sale to an otherwise regular Sunoco customer?
d) I understand merchants are hit with fees. So price it into the soda or chips - I don't care, I just want soda and chips - not a policy that says I can't use my Sunoco card to buy them.

This has happened about 3 times. In each case, I just said "well, I don't want more stuff, so if you don't accept the sale, that's fine...you get to put it away" and left the soda and chips at the register. I don't carry cash, and respect their right to run their business as they see fit. Not a big deal to me. It was just delicious irony that one of those times it caused the whole station to stall.

Next time, I'll do this:
say "OK, let me get more stuff" and go pick out some ice cream novelties. Then let them ring it up, and lets say it comes to $13.50. I'll say "sorry, I have a maximum charge limit of $10. Can you sell all this ice cream to me for $10?" They'll say no, and I'll walk out leaving ice cream on the counter. Policies are policies.

Who's policy is more sensible?

I should also mention that I asked for a void receipt only because she insisted that I needed to sign something to do with the voiding of the transaction...

So I simply asked for the thing to sign and her machine wouldn't print it. I stood there for quite some time, which is silly given that my transaction was rejected and I therefore hadn't paid anything. But I did eventually just leave.

I'm all for a business' right to do as it pleases and accept cash or cards or wampum. But credit card purchase minimums aren't within their rights - they relinquish that right when they agree to take the cards.

Again . . . Seriously? :rolleyes1

The $5 minimum at the corner gas station . . . that's your *thing*?
