Vacuum roller (beater bar) -- bet yours is disgusting

Wifey was complaining, something was clogged on the vac. I took apart the roller assembly and got rid of the usual hair, lint, etc that had wrapped around it.

But, it was still pretty gross looking. The plastic "broom" fibers sticking out were various shades of black and brown and the whole thing felt greasy.

I looked online for a replacement. Yeah, I can get one -- $43.99!

I looked in my shed for a bucket -- hmm the gallon pail was a little short, but it would work. Six ounces of powder Oxygen bleach in a gallon of hottish water. About three-quarters of an hour later, I turned the roller upside down to get the part of it that was sticking out of the water into the soak.

Another hour later, took it out, rinsed it -- looked new. Cheaper than buying a new one.

Our roller is wood. I was a bit worried that soaking it would cause some damage, but it has been six months and no issues (and I am going to treat it again tonight, which is why I am posting now).

Think about it. A greasy, mucky roller moving over your carpet....yuck.

BTW, getting ready to clean for Thanksgiving relatives visiting, which is what really set me moving....

I clean the hair out of mine aleast every two weeks. I've never noticed it feeling greasy.

You probably do not have two 100-pound plus rottweilers who leave fur around.

But, I bet if you soaked that bar you would be disgusted at the amount of "muck" that comes off, irregardless...

grease from the kitchen can travel through the air. It pops out of the pan as we cook and lands on the floor and we track it to other parts of the house. Not to mention all the stuff we walk across outside of the house that we track in. Soot from the fireplace can travel through out the house even into the airducts and it is a sticky substance. You would be surprised the stuff that gets stuck to the beater bar. Also it is a good thing to replace the beater bar every now and then as the bristles do wear down. A good bristle helps lift the dirt from the carpet and fluff the rug. the more dirt you remove from the carpet the longer you extend the life of the carpet. Some dirt has sharp edges and if it gets trapped in the carpet and the vacuum does not pick it up every time you walk over the dirt the shards act like little knives cutting into the carpet fiber.

All our carpets are wool, also, so I don't know if wool retains any natural lanolin from the sheep, which would come across as "greasy" or not...got me. Just know that I love Oxygen bleach for so many tasks.
