Vacuum packing bag and customs at the border

Question--I am flying out of Detroit. My parents are driving down and they have offered to take my luggage as we will see them before we board the Wonder. Now-- I plan to pack with clear vacuum bags as a space saver. I know the airlines would prob. cut these open to search--What about the border.(detroit ambassador bridge) Will they slice and rummage?? If so --no point in doing this and I will have to pack with a more creative space saving method. I don't want my parents stuck having to reorganize stuff into a suitcase that would no longer fit.

Should your parents get stopped and searched, than they will most likely open the bags. However, unless they act suspicious, the probability is quite low. In all my border crossing, I've never been searched. My nightmare is to get stopped when we're going camping for 2 weeks and have them completely unpack our carefully puzzle trunk! In a few instances, they took a quick look in the trunk and our bags, but it was very cursory.

the only time I've been searched at the border is when we travelled through the US to get to Ontario just before Christmas of 2009. We had to open our luggage and show a couple of Christmas presents (rather than making me unwrap things, though, he had me open up gift bags that were more loosely wrapped).

As long as the bags are clear and customs officers can see what's in them, there shouldn't be any slicing and dicing going on.

I have always wondered....when you pack with those spacesaver bags how do you get your stuff back in them???? Don't you need a vaccum to suck the air out?

This will be my first experience with them...but the pkg notes you can roll them or vac. them.
