Is there a big difference between a $50 vacuum cleaner and a $300 one besides the price??

Also, what brand would you recommend?

most likely!

if you had two in mind that you'd like to compare i could try to help you out.

I think a lot of it depends on if you want a standup vacuum or a pull along vacuum, or a bagless, w/ a hepa filter, or if it has a bag how much does the bag hold, how much power does the vacuum have, is it self propelled, is it better for floors or carpet, etc. many different things to consider.

tricia.

I usually buy Hoover. What brands were you considering?

My history with vacuums is Eureka and Hoovers are disposable - they always broke down (I've been through 3 of them - 1 Eureka and 2 Hoovers - in about a 6 year period). I had a Riccar that was wonderful and my mil had a Kirby which she adored, but it was too heavy for her. Good news is we traded. I bought that Riccar (about $600-$700) around 1990 and she bought this Kirby (about $1,000) around the same time - they're both still like new. So happy with them. So, yes, I do believe there is a difference between the cheaper models and the more expensive ones.

they all suck

That's what I said when we bought our Hoover at the beginning of this year! :teeth:

I had my Eureka Boss hard body (disposable bag inside a hard plastic cover) for 7 years (bought it in 1995 for about $90 after a price adjustment and my 15% store discount). I think we changed a belt once, but otherwise never needed service. It still works, but I think it was starting to wear out - it didn't sound so good the last we used it. It was sounding high pitched, like the motor might be konking out. It's still in my basement, not sure if I will try to unload it at a yard sale or what I'll do with it.

Early this year we bought a Hoover WindTunnel V2 with a disposable bag ($200 after my store discount of 15%). It has a HEPA filter, a switch to turn off the beater brush for hard surface cleaning and the on/off switch and tools are easy to access, plus it has a longer cord than the old cleaner- all features I was looking for in a new vacuum. The bagless was like $50 more, the only feature we passed on for the amount we wanted to spend. I was amazed at how much dirt we pulled out of the carpets when we first used it. I think I filled a bag and half or two the first day! So far I have had to change the light bulb (the original burned out), and we have had a problem with the hose pulling out of the vacuum when pulled too hard ( a nuisance). DH took the cover off to clean the area behind the brush and noticed one of the brushes is worn on the end where it's attached to the body, like something might have gotten in there that wasn't supposed to and worn it down. We need to find out if it's covered under warranty.

I also have a Hoover Steam Vac. We've had it for a number of years and also have not had any trouble with it.

Shop around and know what features you need and which ones you can live without. Compare like features when comparing price. If possible go to a store where the sale staff knows the merchandise they sell and can explain the differences in the models.

I have a Kirby and I hate it. I offer to sell it to any Kirby salesperson who shows up at our door. No takers yet. My DH's mother always had one and he just had to have one too. I had a Panasonic that I loved, but it is long gone. 2 years ago I bought myself a Hoover and I like it tons more than the Kirby. My mother has an Oreck and I will probably buy one of those at some point.

How are the dysons? I'm persuaded by the commercial though the thing looks like it weighs more than i do. it would be handling ME around the house. :D

Make mine about $350 and, I'll ditto that! ;) Get the hand vac thing, too!

I also have to say "Get An Oreck". I bought one 5 years ago, I love it and have had no problems of any kind.
I have 2 close friends, one has had hers for 20 years and the other friend has had hers for 15 years. They are both still running! Oreck has a top of the line upright that actually has a 21 year guarantee. That's the one I'm buying DD for her shower gift. I'm sold on Oreck. They work great, they're light, and They LAST!

People always say that about the Dyson...that it looks heavy. But when I've played with it in the store, it didn't strike me as heavy at all.

DH is ordering this one today...it's the "full gear", which is basically "the animal" with an extended warranty. :) It's supposed to be good with pet hair, and pet hair I've got!

To be honest, I know it is alot more money, but central vac is unbeatable. We have a golden retriever so we have hair:rolleyes: Nothing I have ever had compares. It is so easy to handle. If you can put out the initial expense, it is definitely the way to go. Not too hard to install either. My husband did it himself. JMHO;)

You will love the Dyson. We bought one about 6 months ago and can't believe how much dirt and dog hair this thing picks up. It has been a great investment at our house.

You can all kill me if I ever spend so much money on a cleaning tool!
I had a hoover previous to the one I have now ( which is only about a month old ) and that one was almost 11 years old. Now I have a bissell loaded with everything, upright, self propelled, 14.5 Amp , and I paid $58 for it. Works like a charm , I have a german sheppard at home and picks up the hair like you wouldn't believe. I guess it all boils down to what ou really need.
