We need a new one. No way around it! I have not bought one in over 8 yrs!! Who has a favorite? One they would never trade? Who has one they hate and wishes it would fall apart? Looking for all suggestions here. Thanks!

What is your price range? We have a new Hoover Self Propelled vacuum that I bought not long ago at Costco. For the price it's a good vacuum. I've owned them before and I like them a lot, but they don't last forever. It's heavy, which is not good if you need to carry it up and down stairs (I have a vacuum on each level so that's not a concern). In the self propel mode it pushes very easily and I like the dirt finder light, especially when vacuuming an area that gets real dirty or when my kids are using it. Our last vacuum was a higher end Panasonic, which was supposed to be very good, but I never really like it--it's hard to push, the attachments are not very good, and when doing hard floors it kept going back to the carpet setting.

I've had uprights, canisters, bagless, etc over the past 20 years and not one was worth squat. I just got a Dyson Animal (the price was right at Home Depot! ;)) and I'm amazed at what it picks up. I had just run my freshly-bagged kenmore fancy schmancy on my common room area rug when I turned my Dyson on it. DH said it was a "Kirby Moment" with all the junk that puppy got out of the rug...there was at least a sandwich baggie full and that was on a *freshly* vacuumed carpet!!!

Now, I've only had it for a week or so, so the honeymoon may come to an end, but so far, it's the best vacuum I've ever had.

Our old house had a central vac system :worship: , and we just recently moved to a house without one  . There is nothing nearly as powerful as central vacs...they are truly amazing!!

So, I was really nervous about what vaccuum to buy. I joined consumerreports.com and looked at their test results. Far and away the best vaccuum was the Dyson Animal. It is expensive, but they said SOOOO worth the money. I went to Sears because they have an exclusive contract on the the "Dyson complete"....it is the animal with extra attachments...really cool!!! I don't like it as well as my central vac, but I didn't expect to. It is the best "portable" vaccuum I have ever had (and used to have $1500 Royal cansiter vac).

I would HIGHLY recommend this vaccuum!!

I have a Eureka Boss that I got from Amazon for about $130. It uses a bag and has a HEPA filter. Works great. They say the bagless ones are great for people with allergies.

Another Dyson lover here. We've had ours for over a year and it's still a pretty good 'sucker'. You can't imagine how full the canister was when I vacuumed my carpet in my brand new house before we even moved in our furniture. I was amazed! Now with a cat, it's even more valuable. Check Costco - they run specials from time to time. The unit itself is a little cumbersome, but you won't mind when you see what comes out of your carpet.

Yes, another decision is whether you want bagless or bagged. We wanted bagged since that's what the dr said is best for allergies (so the dust doesn't scatter when emptied), but the bagless are very popular.

I laugh whenever I hear the commercial when the guy says it doesn't lose suction, but the first couple times I heard it I thought it said that it doesn't use suction--I wondered exactly how that would work. :rotfl:
