I actually made cake last night...all that talk was more than I could take! Yummy white cake!

I am sooooo not pulling off this "dieting" thing well. Did I mention before I "hid" the Thin Mints in the deep freeze outside in the hopes I would talk myself out of eating them by the time I got down there?

I don't think they have done the smallpox vaccine in many years. I could be wrong though. It was the vaccine that left the weird mark on everyone's upper arms...was this recently?

Yup - in 2004. All military members deployed to war zones get it. He actually got it twice since they thought the first one didn't "take" so he has two scars from it. Small pox DOES still exist in laboratories.

And I will be eating low carb chocolate cake for breakfast.

DH got it in 2004 before going to Iraq. They have to be real careful and keep the area covered as it is a live virus.

He got some sort of anthrax vaccine too.

I would enjoy a piece of cake from Publix please. Yellow with chocolate fudge frosting.

Small pox DOES still exist in laboratories.

I do believe there are 2 labs with it The CDC here in the states and in Russia (I think) and every once in a while there are "talks" about destroying it all, but then everyone worries that one or the other country will lie and not really destroy it all so neither wants to do it.

Hiding thin mints in the freeze? That is when they are best! Just eat the box and be done with it...no more temptation!

I am trying to remember............ Wasn't small pox one of the more difficult vaccinations to get and it had some nasty side effects????? Am I right in remembering that? I remember people who big scars on their arms from the vax. It was a live one wasn't it?

Yes, it is a live vaccination. It is also contagious for quite some time at the innoculation site. There was a story in the news a little while ago with a father in the military spreading small pox to his little boy.

Scares the bejeesus out of me. Why can't we use cowpox to vaccinate for that one anymore? Did the scientists culture smallpox and not cowpox?

based on this discussion - I researched a little this am - I was trying to remember how it all went post 9/11:

the article talks about how the gov't first wanted balnket immunizations,l or at least of health care/emergency workers - but with dissent from physicians, etc that plan was scrapped. The article also gives some background/history.

It is from 2003, I believe. I think most of the info is still valid though.

That's a very interesting article, pans. Thanks for sharing it. It shows that there is a point where the medical community at large will refuse to act even after a government demand / recommendation, after a careful risk / benefit evaluation of the scientific evidence. It seems pretty clear here. I wonder where the line in the sand actually lies, though.

If I am reading this article right, the boy contracted "Vaccinia virus. The smallpox vaccine contains a live virus, vaccinia, which is very similar to smallpox."

Well that's just not fair at all! I don't want the calories without the taste. I have some strawberry topping I can contribute though.....

Yes, that's the one. I still have the mark on my arm.

Back after 9/11 Bush had the small pox shot...he was trying to round up support for front line responders getting it.

Their are pretty serious problems with it....but smallpox is an amazing, devastating virus that kills a huge percentage of people who get it, like 30 percent, and scars most of the rest horribly for life.

I think the odds broke down that you had about a 1 percent chance of dying from the vaccine, and a 30 percent chance of dying from the disease, so they made everyone get the vaccine.

Of course now smallpox has been eradicated. Our only fears with that disease are terrorism.

That's the remark I made earlier...this generation would never give their kids a vaccine where there was a 1 percent fatality rate. Unless, of course, they see a smallpox epidemic grab the country. Then there will be real panic.

Anybody who hasn't should take a look at the pictures of smallpox. You'll understand the phrase "A pox on you" then. They are really sobering.
