turn one ice tray upside down in your freezer. This way if you have a power outage that is long enough to have the ice melt, you'll know, even if the power comes back on and refreezes everything!

That's a neat idea. I would simplify it and just leave one loose ice cube out or in a little plastic cup. That way the melting ice wouldn't mess up anything.

Of course, if there was a majorly long power outage I'd probably know by the dead fish in my tank when I got home.

Yes, our house gets a "spring" cleaning, before our vacation, no matter what time of year it is! My mother taught me to do this and it's a lesson well learned and greatly appreciated!

This is such a good tip. When we took our Disney vacation in May, we came home to find out that our house alarm had gone off that morning and my mother in law (the alarm company called her when they couldn't reach us) and the police had gone thru our whole house to check things out. Thank goodness nothing was wrong and we still have no idea what set it off.
My husband laughed at me when I walked thru the whole house to see how bad it looked to them when they walked thru it

Now when we leave in 2 days, you better believe my house will be sparkling

Somehow, I always find that no matter how much I clean before I go, I still end up cleaning when I get back, too. Maybe I just notice things I didn't before.

I think this is because on vacation, you generally stay in a hotel with daily maid service so the place is cleaned, vacuumed, beds made, bathroom cleaned, etc. every day. Then you get home and it just isn't the same.
