Vacation Protection Plan question

I just booked a 5 night cruise with 2 CC stops. When I look at my reservation page, it says that the Vacation Protection Plan is "Added". The CM that I spoke to when I booked my trip said that it is included. However, I seem to remember paying extra for this on my 3 day cruise on the Dream last summer. I did not see an extra charge when I paid my deposit this time. Does anyone have experience with this? TIA!

The insurance is not actually paid for until you make your final payment. Having insurance added does not affect your deposit amount.

Isn't the deposit a percentage of the cost? Adding the insurance would raise that number.

DCL doesn't purchase the insurance until final payment, buy you give them the money beforehand.

OP - I'd suggest you check into 3rd party insurance. It often costs less and covers more than purchasing through the cruise line.

The deposit is a percentage of the Cruise Fare plus Port Fees but does not include insurance, taxes, transfers or any other ad-ons like air or hotel.

I've never heard of any kind of "included insurance" from DCL ... unless the CM meant, "It's 'included' because you're paying for it."

Thanks, didn't realize they split it out and only took the deposit on a portion of the total cost.

Depending on when you booked and what your needs are, it might be worthwhile to keep - I know many policies need to be purchased within x days of booking the vacation to get extra benefits...or something. I remember reading something about that.

Ah, here we go - from travelguard:

Extra Coverages
(when coverage is purchased within 15 days of Initial Trip Payment)
  • Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver (Limitations apply)
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage due to Financial Default of an airline, cruise line, or tour operator. (Financial default is not covered for all suppliers. Please visit www.travelguard.com/customerservice/alertlist/ for details.)
  • Medical Expense (Primary)
  • Baggage & Personal Effects (Primary)

Yes, there are varying time limits for certain coverages. I've seen anywhere from 14 days to 3 months for pre-existing medical conditions.

I don't believe DCL covers pre-existing conditions at all, however.

One thing we like about DCL insurance is that if your claim gets rejected by the actual insurance company for any reason, DCL gives you 75% of the cost of the cruise as a credit that you can use to book a cruise if it is taken within one year of the date you cancelled.
