i did a vacation package for next month's trip and i did buy the insurance...just in case something came up and i had to cancel for some reason. now i'm kind of planning our trip next year and was looking to book things separately to save money, but now i'm wondering about trip insurance?:confused3

i've read a lot about booking separately saves you money...BUT for those who still prefer to book a DL vacation package, do you also purchase vacation/trip insurance? yes or no? and what are your reasons for purchasing (or not purchasing)?

hi there, last year i purchased it "just in case"...i did it thru my mastercard, so it was pretty cheap, for the whole family it was less than a 100 dollars, and it covered pretty much anything...we are going to go in may now, and i will purchase as soon as we book our flight...it is just peace of mind. For me, i always worry as my inlaws are getting up there in age, and that is my main reason..have an awesome trip...

Well, first you have to know the cancelation info for various aspects of the trip. If booking through WDTC, what are their policies? Are their policies so restrictive that you'll lose everything if suddenly you can't go?

Also know your airline. If you're flying SW, trip insurance for the flight is NOT worth it, unless you never ever plan on flying SW again. But if you're flying on one of the "can't cancel" airlines, then trip insurance might be worth it.

Also know that you do not have to get trip insurance through WDTC! You can look at insuremytrip.com and there's another one or two out there, and check out their policies, see what is best for your situation, and then compare the price.

And of course while information-gathering, find out EXACTLY what the WDTC insurance will cover. It would be rotten to think you're covered for something, but find out you're not!

Hi, I went through InsureMyTrip, like Molly said; it was pretty easy. They line them all up and show you the differences in cost and coverage; you can compare pretty easily. They also rate them.

I estimated my trip for the two of us at around $1500, and got a policy through Travelex for $59. Seems to be just what we needed.

thank you for the feedback, everyone!

molly and gail, what are we doing indoors?! the weather is perfect outside!!! unless you ladies are surfing wirelessly in your backyard! :)
