Vacation Homes That Cannot be Rebuilt after Ike

The Open Beaches Act Notice is in the standard form of residential contract of sale that is used in Texas (published by the Texas Real Estate Commission.)

why don't you tell that to YANKEECHICK!! and her kids that you feel sorry for them, but your glad they can't rebuild!!!

my point is that we can feel sorry for the poor people who do nothing ,but keep popping babies and living on welfare(LA AND TX)and 3 years later still here about how katrina people got nothing. which they did get over $2,000 FROM FEMA and also more food stamps. these people from IKE are getting NOTHING and lots of people died ,but the gov. is keeping a black out on the deaths. these people can't even get food stamps:confused3 and also the media is not even talking about IKE,but im sure next yr. we will here about katrina's 4 yr ann. please! I feel sorry for peoples home who were destroyed bc of ike!!!

So in other words, your point has nothing what so ever to do with this thread?

I guess that is the diff between ike and katrina people. we can afford to rebuild w/o handouts and can pay for a lawyer also!!!!!!!

You should just step away from the computer. It's like you are itching for a fight, and want to just lump all of NO together.

If Texas has a law, and you decide to buy your house/property based upon that law, then if the worse case scenario happens, you need to deal with it.

Also, I find it repulsive how you consider yourself to be superior to the "poor":sad2: :sad2:

It's not a contest, "my disaster was worse than your disaster."

I saw lots of coverage in the media of "Ike" people standing in line for food stamps and Fema credit cards.:confused3

why don't ya'll ***** about how we are paying to rebuild the gehtto in new orleans. I get it help the poor ,but not the middle class people who pay for everything w/ NO HANDOUTS!!!! you people make me  If this was your home and it was gone from a hurricane would you feel the same way.

So in other words, your point has nothing what so ever to do with this thread?

:thumbsup2 There seems to be a whole lotta angst rolled up in that one little paragraph that has nothing to do with vacation homes on the Texas coast.

You have been saying and posting awful, hurtful, hateful things since before Ike made landfall. We GET it, you don't like how this has been handled, and you REALLY don't like anyone who lives in New Orleans (even though there were many other people affected by Katrina, outside of the NOLA city limits). You should really take a step back, and stop posting such awful things.

Please quote ANYONE who has posted so far in this thread who has said they are "GLAD" that homes can't be rebuilt. NOBODY has used the word "Glad" in any of their post.

Thank you, for posting close to my thoughts on this. I could not put it in to words with out losing points or getting the thread closed.

Weren't there a lot of people in LA flooded due to IKe also?
:confused3

Yes- People from Alabama all the way through to Texas- flooded as a result of IKE.

My area had the highest level ever and we are inland- and it was storm surge coming up that high.

Cameron Parish had minor flooding with Katrina, was completely wiped out by Rita (not even the pilings and slabs remained for most property)- and then were flooded again with water much higher then the "direct hit" they got from Rita- when Ike was visiting our neighbors.

There are many people who won't be able to rebuild- not because of the laws of disappearing land- it disappears in LA at a rate of 30 feet a year without a hurricane... but there are now elevation requirements even for trailers that would be lived in while rebuilding an elevated home- many can't afford to do both... so won't do either.

It is sad. All the damage seen everywhere.

But it happens all over- not just on the Gulf Coast- I've seen results of sink holes, land slides, forrest fires, earth quakes and tornadoes- all over the country- I'd be hard pressed to find a place "safe" to build in.

I do understand the Texas law- they are trying to maintain and protect their beaches- something I know was never done in Louisiana- which is why people don't flock here for our beach front property. Unfortunately- coastal errosion does happen everywhere and people will lose their property to the water on all of our nation's coasts. In this case- Ike not only destroyed the property but took the land too. It may come back- it may not. Where would you rebuild if your land was gone? In the gulf? Or take someone else's land?

Like I said- it is sad- and very hard to see all the destruction across the gulf coast from all of these storms.

then you should know why people would want to live on the beach.

I want to live on the beach too, but I don't because I understand the dangers of living on the beach. Those people made a choice to live there knowing full well what would eventually happen.

That's fine if they want to live on the beach, But their property isn't there anymore. It's GONE! That is the chance people take when they live on any body of water.

Here it's the lake. The Power Company owns the lake. It says on the deed that the property lines rise and fall with the lake levels. So if the Power Company (who controls the Dam, thus water levels) decided to raise the water level and it takes up most of person's yard. The property owner loses their land.

I feel the same way about rebuilding the 9th ward in NO.

And, my home would not be on the shoreline. Ever. Anywhere. Not even if I was filty, dirty, rotten, stinking rich.

Count me in as another one that feels the same way.

Wow Tinkerjess, you are one bitter person. Take a chill pill.

im mad bc nobody is helping these people. i don't hate anybody from new orleans. i just think what all has happened is not fair at all. if you grown up living on the coast and your whole family lives there why would these people want to live anywhere elese.not all of the homes were vacation homes these were peoples homes!!!

I agree that it is sad to see anyone lose their home for any reason. But, regardless of whether they've always lived there or not, the fact remains living on the coast is dangerous. You either accept the danger and remain, with the understanding that you are responsible for the consequences, or you find a safer place to live.

I'm not glad that they can't rebuild. It is sad that they can't rebuild. Very sad. Very very sad that the beach was washed away. I am very sorry about that. But that doesn't mean that the homeowners had no notice. Some of us live where it is flat and brown....no mountains, no oceans....no mudslides, no hurricanes...no natural beauty....the big draw of the coastal areas can also be the big danger. Some people don't read their contracts. But lots of others are aware of the risk and rely on the odds; most win and a few lose. I bet if you had interviewed the residents of Galveston Island several years ago about the Open Beaches Act, most would have been generally aware of the law but would have said, "But I enjoy living here so much that I'll take my chances."

these people are saying it wasn't in their deed!! i belive them. some of these houses are worth millions. do you think people would build million dollar homes if they saw this in their deed!

There is an R on the end of that "safeR place". Yes mother nature happens everywhere. But it's not everywhere there is a clause that the state can take your land back. These people happen to build where there is one.
