Ok, yes, we are planning a trip NOT to WDW! We decided we need a break on next vacation. We'd like a relaxing beach trip somewhere on the East Coast of US, not NJ since we live here and have been everyone on the Jersey shore. Looking for some suggestions! So far we've come up with the Florida Keys (not sure which ones though), Block Island, Newport, and Martha's Vineyard. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Try Kiawah Island Resort here in Charleston

or Wild Dunes on Isle of Palms, SC

Pawley's Island is an hour from Charleston and a little less than that from Myrtle Beach!

We enjoyed a week in the Outer Banks a couple of years ago. We rented a house in Duck. It was just about 3 houses from the beach (beachfront is much more expensive) and had it's own swimming pool and hot tub. We swam, played on the beach, parasailed, visited Kitty Hawk, the acquarium, and Roanoke Island. It was nice because you could be active if you wanted, or just veg if you wanted.

If you rent a house there, just be sure there is public beach access nearby. Sometimes, you might be very close to the beach, but there is no way for you to access it.

Thanks just requested a guide for SC!

I second the Outerbanks, NC. It is a wonderfully relaxing vacation.

My vote goes to Myrtle Beach! We love the Keys, but only for a long weekend. The Outer Banks are a little too relaxed for us. I guess it depends on what you're looking for, but we like laying on the beach & playing in the water during the day, then have a variety of things to do at night. At MB there's more than enough to do, if you stayed a month. We've lived in NC & VA, & now live in FL, so we've been to lots of beaches up & down the east coast. MB is the only one that we don't get bored at, if staying a week or longer. Like I said, we're not happy entertaining ourselves all the time though.

ok just requested a brochure for outer banks.

Never been to Myrtle Beach. Is it to spring breakish? We'd go in the summer anyway, but just wondering if it's lots of wild and crazy college kids? We a married couple in our 30s no kids.

You'll find all kinds! Don't miss the Aquarium!!

Would it be warm enough to visit the Outer Banks in mid-April??? How about all the way down to Hilton Head-- would that be warm enough?? We are looking to head somewhere the day after Easter for that week. I know it's going to be a popular travel week, but I'm confident we'll find accomdoations somewhere we decide to go.

I like the distance to the Outer Banks--but don't want it to be too cold. Also, wouldn't mind Hilton Head and Charelston split-- but thats a bit father for 5-6 days.

No, Myrtle Beach is not too "spring breakish", lots of families there too. It is a bit "touristy" however. I LOVE Hilton Head -- I would definitely consider that.

Block Island is nice for a day or two but not much to do there. Martha's Vineyard is lovely but can be quite costly. Newport is beautiful, too but if you're going in that direction, I'd keep going and prefer the coast of Maine. They have that beautiful rocky coast, gorgeous beaches (albeit cold water) and great seafood! Quintessential New England!

Not enough to do in Block Island in my opinion. You might consider Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, but they are quiet too. I vote for the Maine coast or Cape Cod.

We rented a house in Maine a couple of summers ago. It was on a lake and about 30 minutes from Bar Harbour. We can't wait to go back.

This summer we are renting a house in the Outer Banks.

Saratoga, NY

not really your typical beachy resort place, but deffinately an amazing resort town...why else would WDW made their very own version. You're not going to get much of an ocean, but there are beaches. There's the horse races, Congress Park, you could stay in an old mansion or manor home. And maybe even go into the Adirondacks.

okay plan B lol...

Narragansett bay in Rhode Island. I go surfing there over the summer. It is a lovely laid back town.

P-Town Massachusettes.

I'll try and think of choices that are a little more magical :wizard:

I agree with those saying that there is not enough to do in Block Island. We love it, and take our sailboat there every summer for a long weekend...but that's it... can't take more than that. I also agree with the person that said Martha's Vineyard can be a bit pricey, but it's a LOT of fun. I don't think everyone should be quick to dismiss Newport, there's plenty to do there, and you definitely could go to Block Island for a day or 2 as the Block Island ferry is only 20 minutes from Newport in Narragansett. (Pt. Judith). Newport has the mansions, beaches US Tennis hall of fame, boat show, shopping, eating, the cliff walk, digging for clams, fishing, tons of stuff. I grew up in Narragansett and we kept a sailboat in Jamestown which is just accross the bay from Newport. I know the area well ! I say go for the Newport/Block Island combo.

Good question! I don't know. We were there in June and it was HOT, but the ocean water was still (bbrrrrrr) freezing cold. We were told it would warm up in another couple of weeks.

So I don't know about April, but it might not be beach weather, and probably not swimming-in-the-ocean weather.

Now, I've done Virginia Beach (which has gotten so run down in the last 5-10 yrs) twice in middle of May-- once way back in early 90's the other in 2004. We had really nice weather both trips. The air was in the mid-80's and the water wasn't bad either. However, that was a month later, alittle further north though. Just wondering if it was a fluke. I don't want to go to a beach town and have it be too cold for the beach, kwim.

I second Hilton Head! I spent a week there a few years ago, and absolutely loved it. I have a friend who loves the Outer Banks.

On the other end of the spectrum - someone else mentioned - The Adirondacks - I went to college there, and although I hate the winter - it is a beautiful place to visit any season!
Metropolitan areas - Washington DC, Baltimore

We go to Lake Placid at least every other year- if not more. If you like to camp--- it seems to be the best way to see this area. It really seems more geared towards camping. Also, if you like to fly fish (the men in my life do), this area is incredible for that.

We always stay at the KOA- and rent a cabin. There is like 3 KOA's in the immediate area. There are some great boat tours on Lake Placid. As well as all the olympic sites to tour. Also, there is a great strip of unqiue "mountain" type shops right in town. Lot's of hiking and fishing as well.
