When will we get to use all our DVC points. I paid for them and we can only borrow half. So crazy🤬

No one knows when the restriction will end yet but probably looking at sometimes in 2022.

I know it’s frustrating for those that plan a few years in advance those special trips and this change from last year. is still in place.

The good news is that they are not going anywhere!

That is not acceptable. I will not be buying anymore points. Taking my money and not letting us use are points is so wrong in so many ways. You guys lost a very good customer!!

Unfortunately we are not guaranteed the right to borrow up to 100%. Those rules are subject to change and always have been.

They even have the right to suspend them from time to time if they need to.

I only say this because it is important for anyone considering DVC to be sure to understand these things.

Before the pandemic many owners assumed it could not be changed only to dig deeper to realize it can.

When DVC first opened it was limited to 50%. I know this doesn’t help you and others caught in it.

Buthey had to find a way to spread out the glut of points created by closure and this move helps with that issue.

Again sorry it’s impacting you negatively.

It sucks that you probably had a vacation planned for those points and now it will be ruined or at least modified. But I will tell you that you sound very entitled in the above post. You will get more sympathy if you lose the entitled talk and tell us about the vacation that you had planned and now have to cancel or modify. You might even find some helpful or at least genuine suggestions.

I understand your frustration but we are all impacted by the 50% rule so try to not take it personally.

As @Sandisw posted, 100% borrowing was not always the norm. And given the large number of points in the system as a result of the pandemic, it only makes sense that they place a restriction on borrowing until things even out.

The 50% rule borrowing sucks. No doubt about it. The good thing is that resale points are at a high right now. If you are done with Disney ( lots are ) if you sell right now it will be you best return on investment, especially if it’s a small contract. Maybe take some time away, rent your points for a year or two ( rental prices are up too ). No AP’s is also a big problem with Disney right now for a lot of people. Disney got rid of AP’s in DL, talk about getting worked over. DL is a locals parks over 80% of visitors were pass holders. It’s about 20% for WDW. Remember what it was like in DL when Star Wars opened and they blocked pass holders, it was a ghost town.

Timeshares are like a metaphorical game of Tetris. For every room that is built, the developer can sell the ability to occupy that room about 51 weeks out of the year. In DVC's case, the commodity is points. Every Two Bedroom Villa at Beach Club would cost about 16700 points to book for an entire year. So for every 2B they build, they can sell about 16400 points, holding back a small percent so that rooms can be taken out of service for maintenance. Owners use their points to book resorts/rooms as they are able, and eventually the calendar fills out with nearly all owner points used for some villa stay (thus the Tetris analogy.)

Then came covid.

EVERY resort was closed for 3 months...and some much longer than that. MILLIONS of points worth of capacity were lost...but DVC made exceptions to the normal expiration and banking rules so that owners did not lose their points.

Meanwhile, even as the resorts opened, many owners were unwilling or unable (international) to travel for nearly a year. Resorts sat at partial capacity, while (again) points were extended and penalties waived.

What we have now is a scenario where there are already tens of millions more points in the system (from 2019 and 2020) than there are accommodations. Allowing owners to borrow even more points from future years compounds the problem.

The only other option would have been for DVC to take a hardline stance on point usage. They could have left the resorts open throughout the pandemic and said that there would be no rules exceptions. Have points that expire May 31, 2020 (or July '20, or November '20...)? sorry, you either use them or lose them. Have plans for an early 2021 visit and can't get out of UK due to air travel restrictions? Sorry, not our problem. Going to Hawaii and the state has a mandatory 2 week quarantine? Enjoy your hotel room!

There are about 78 million DVC points in the system. Thanks to DVC granting exceptions to the rules throughout 2020, there are probably (guessing) 100-120 million points in owners' hands in 2021....while still only 78 million points worth of rooms to rent. Does it make ANY sense to allow owners to borrow even more points from 2022 and beyond??

To be fair, no one has already paid for a future years points.

An interesting (at least to me" point that somebody pointed out to me once. Every point you own is already in your account. You just do not get access to them until a certain time. Disney does not dole out the points every year.

You've always been restricted to what points you may use As mentioned when you purchase the contract you are buying all the years of points right then but you have typically been restricted to use of current points plus they allow you to bank one year and to borrow up to one year ahead. It's been tightened now because there was a world wide event that they felt required a response in the allowable usage. Also to point out that in borrowing you are using points that you have not paid the UY fees on so that's generally quite a nice benefit. Compare all of this to a typical fixed week timeshare where your week is there every year and might have been completely lost and the point system allows you to have more flexibility by not being tied to certain dates or unit sizes.

DVC is doing nothing illegal or even wrong. The POS you purchased under always allowed both banking and borrowing modifications. It even allows them to restrict certain times for booking and do a lottery. I understand the disappointment but there's no wrong doing.

Yeah, I'm a new DVC owner (purchased this year), so I was not a beneficiary of the banking exceptions they made in 2020, and even I see this is the obvious better solution. Someone who had a trip scheduled in May 2020 had no way of knowing the pandemic was coming and should not lose all their points--it's only fair that Disney let them bank the points to 2021, and as a result, borrowing restrictions are inevitable. I'm surprised they didn't suspend borrowing altogether. We always have the option to book a shorter trip or a split stay (half DVC, half cash) as an alternative to borrowing points for a longer DVC stay.

Even though we can’t borrow up to 100% of our points which sucks, you make it sound like you can’t use your points at all and thats not the case.

Your points are yours to use when they are usable meaning you can’t borrow them all but you can definitely use them.

You can work with another owner - rent their points for this trip and link the reservations. Next year, rent out the points you would have borrowed this year to someone else. Its a pain in the back end, but the system is what it is.

That is exactly what I did for our upcoming October/November vacation for 19 of us. Usually, we just use 2 years of points when we do this. This was my first points transfer in over 20 years as a member.

1. "You guys" is not who you're talking to here. This is a forum for Disney fans to discuss Disney plans. 2. Your DVC contract says they can do exactly what they are doing. I'm not happy about it either, but it is what I signed up for.

I feel like OP wants more than anyone here on a fan forum can give. These rules have been in place for a while. Sure they suck but if they want to they can keep it this way. Could always sell your contract and pay cash for the stays.
