That sounds like a crazy price for the cruise, which is odd because cruises can usually be good deals (maybe try checking with Dreams Unlimited Travel).

But where in Mexico are you talking about? That would make or break the decision for me.

I booked our Dream cruise about a month after the new rates came out. It is a 4 day and was extremely affordable. If money were the issue, why not wait until this fall when new rates are released and plan for 2012? Just a thought....

The longer you wait the higher the price will be. But if you plan early enough it can still be a reasonable family vacation without stressing over how much everything costs.

I would vote for Mexico now, and maybe book a cruise in the fall for the next year.

I know people feel safe going to Mexico, but right now, I don't think I would go into that country. I know people say, they stay at the resort the whole time, but you still have to transfer from the airport to the resort. And this is where they car jackings are taking place. It may have been safe just a year ago, but the last 4 months have really gotten more scarier.
For the extra $800, I would stick with the Mickey Cruise.

I think it depends on where in Mexico you are talking about. it is a big country and the problems are not everywhere. I would not go to Cancun/Alcopulco, Mexico City nor anywhere near the border. I would not hesitate to go to Puerto Vallarta though.

Sorry, but if you cannot afford the deposit how are you going to pay for the entire cruise?.

I missed that part of OPs post. OP, honestly I would not be going away for vacation at all if my budget was that tight. What will you do if you have an emergency while travelling? If the washing machine breaks down? If you need car repairs? Truly, the deposit for the cruise should still be less than the budget you are saying for the Mexico trip, so I would not try either if that money is not there. Other people are more comfortable with these thigns than I am though.
