UY Question

We are in the process of buying Boardwalk points through resale. I would also like to get some points at Old Key West. I know that it's BEST to have the same UY, but how necessary is it if we only have two contracts to manage? I was hoping we could have a little flexibility when we look at resale offers with other UYs, but if it's too difficult, I will stick with the same UY.

There is nothing difficult about having more than one UY as long as you manage the point usage effectively. Having more than one UY can actually be a benefit if you plan on visiting WDW more than once each year and you can coordinate the visits with your UY.

The only shortcomings could be in combining the points from different UY's and then having to cancel the ressie... you could end up with 60 day points which is a real pain and severely limits your ability to use the points.

As long as you can manage the points, I don't see a real issue.

I just went through the same analysis. Here are some things to consider:

* Same UY, banking window.
* Points can be pooled (regardless of resort) at the 7 month mark with the same UY. This only comes into play if you need enough points to make a reservation and neither contract has enough to cover the night. For example, if I need 30 points to cover a night and my SSR's contract has 15 points and my VB contract has same UY, I can pool the points and make the ressie. If different, I have to transfer 15 points from one contract to the other. You are only allowed 1 transfer (in or out) per year. (Note: if you add on through resale with the same UY, make sure you specify in the contract that you want the points added on to your existing master contract).
* If you travel at different times of the year, having separate UYs can actually be of benefit. For example, if you take regular trips in May and November, having enough points to cover your May trips with a April UY and a separate contract to cover your November trips with an Oct UY will give you the most flexibility with banking, rescheduling, borrowing, etc.

Overall, I didn't think the "cons" were all that great and just made an offer on a contract with a different UY. Sure, it would be nice to be able to pool the points to make a reservation. However, the benefits of having a different UY far outweighed watching a separate banking window and having to deal with a transfer on occasion.

This is all based on what I've read. Others with actual experience may have more valuable advice!!! ;)

I'm not the best at all this... someone correct me if I'm wrong!
UY is mainly important for banking... and canceling situations. If you'll be traveling to each resort at different times of the year, it could actually be helpful for you to have different UY tied to those times you travel in case of a cancelation.

If you buy your OKW at resale too... you will have a different membership number... even if it's the same UY. This makes it somewhat harder to combine 2 membership number points for 1 trip reservations (say at the 7month or less booking window.) It can be done... but day's must be assigned to a particular membership. They don't add all the points you own together... unless you have 1 membership number. (say you have 15 points on each membership to use... nights are 10pts each and you request 3 nights. You'll get 1 nt on each membership and have 5 pts left on each membership. Then you would need to transfer one to the other to complete the reservation.)

If you buy OKW from Disney, they probably can get you the same UY and it would be under your BWV resale purchase. Points easy to combine for reservations.

Bottom line: I'd say if you were buying resale... just go for the best deal... with a UY that is just prior to a time period you'd more than likely be traveling.

Whew... Good Luck!:wizard:
(hey, I see where buckeye fan posted while I was trying to get this posted... I may have duplicated info... sorry!)

My understanding is if you purchase resale with the same UY, you can request that it be added to your master contract. That way, at the 7 month mark, you can pool all points to make a reservation without transferring. Just make sure if you purchase resale that you ask that it be added to the master you already have. You'll probably need to provide them a member number so it's crystal clear.

WebmasterDoc just posted this in another thread:

If they have the same Use Year, resales can be added to an existing Master contract - provided the names on the deed are identical to the Master and DVC is aware of the situation.

In the past, DVC has sometimes automatically added the resale to the original Master (under the conditions mentioned above) - but sometimes the resale went thru as a separate contract. If adding the resale to your existing Master is desired, I'd let Member Accounting know about the resale well before closing so they can modify the paperwork accordingly.

Thought I'd circle back since I had posted above and wanted to confirm. By the way, welcome to the Disboards!!! party:

Thanks Buckeye Fan for clearing that up... I've got so much to learn!!!

I have 2 membership numbers... and 2 different UY... but really haven't got the whole system figured out... and never will! Thanks to smart folks on these boards for posting!

Hey...believe me, I TOTALLY understand. I didn't realize you could combine until a week or so ago, and I've been lurking on these boards for a year or so now!!! I'm with you, though...so much to learn! :teacher:

It's easy, just think of your two contracts being totally separate from each other as they are separate from every other DVC member's contracts.

You must manage them totally separate from each other. Points cannot be combined in any manner to make reservations. They have their own banking windows.

Think of it this way. You and your spouse have a joint checking account. Your paycheck is deposited automatically. Your spouse's paycheck is deposited automatically. You have a house mortgage that is paid automatically every month. All of this is similar to having a single DVC membership number. Everything is common. It would be as if your master contract was at OKW and you had an Add-On contract at SSR.

Now, having different use years means you have different contracts that have totally separate membership numbers. It'd be as if you had a bank account and your spouse had a separate bank account. Paycheck deposits would be going into the accounts separately. Everything is either one account or the other. Instead of a 'joint' (EG Add-on DVC contract) it's be two separate 'individual' bank accounts (EG Two different use year contracts each having their own unique membership number.)

Hope this helps.

If you have to transfer points between accounts, are you limited to the 1 transfer in our out per year. That to me would be a big problem with having separate UYs.

Yes. If you transferred points from one of your accounts to the other, you've used up the one-transfer/year option for BOTH accounts.

I have been in both situations. I owned two different UYs (one BWV, one OKW) and I had little problems managing them. I sold my OKW contract and added on at AKV through Disney so now both resorts have the same UY. I find it much easier to manage both contacts with the same UY. I would recommend that you wait for the an OKW contract to come around wit the right UY. You may have to wait an extra month or two but I think it will be worth it.
