I have been so confused with UY. It has intrigued me enough to call back the person who sold us our membership and asked if there was a difference between one UY and another. She was very as a matter of fact about it but did not clarify the benefits or disadvantages. Can the experts here help please?

I am a teacher so I will most likely travel Christmas Week, Easter Break and Summer. We just purchased into a September UY. Does this work or should we get another UY instead?

Thanks for all your help.http://www.wdwinfo.com/images/smilies/surf.gif

Your UY determines when you can bank points and has control over when you can make reservations for non-dvc locations.

You can only bank points during the first 8 months of your UY. With a September UY, you can bank points any time from 9/1 to 4/30. If you call and cancel a reservation from 5/1 to 8/31, the points associated with that reservation would not be bankable.

For exchanges (non-DVC locations), you can not book during the last 4 months of your UY for a stay that would also be during those 4 months.

Since you would most likely travel in December, March/April, or the summer, those are all over the calendar, and I do think that one UY would be as good as another.

Also, if you are buying from Disney, since this is August, you will be getting 2009 points that you will be allowed to bank, if you do so before the end of August. This is a good deal. Those points are banked and on September 1, you get your whole new allottment.

sept is not a great UY for summer trips as explained above - because if you need to cancel a july or august trip, you will be past your banking window which closes april 30. travelling in the last few months of your UY is riskier for this reason.

december would be a better UY for the periods described above because the banking window doesn't close until july 31, giving you more options if you cancel a reservation earlier in your UY.

ideally, you'd like to travel early in your UY, like taking december trips with a december UY.

but if you never cancel a trip, UY will never be an issue. (and remember that UY month has nothing to do with when you can call to book.)

here is more info if you want it:

September would not really be recommend for a person who wants to travel in the summer. A Dec UY would work better for your travel dates and would allow banking of points if you ever need to cancel a trip you had planned between Dec 1st and July 31st. Actually it covers August pretty well b/c if you didn't cancel in July (more than 31 days from check-in) then the points would go into holding.

The benefit of having a UY that allows banking if you have to cancel is that you won't lose your points or only have a very short window to try and use them before the expire. If you never cancel a trip then UY doesn't come into play.

Given your travel dates, I would go with a Dec UY rather than September.

Having a UY in which most of your travel falls within the first 8 months allows for the most flexibility if you have to cancel a trip or even want to change your plans.

With Sept UY, any trips in the summer, if cancelled or change, could leave you with points that would expire on August 31st. You would be outside your banking window and would not even have time to reschedule a trip.

With a Dec UY, the banking window is July 31st. Any trip cancellations or changes, even for August, would still allow you to bank points. And, if there were borrowed points from a summer trip, it would still give you at least a few months to re-book before they expire on November 30th.

If you can still get things changed, I would. I am assuming that the reason you were offered a Sept UY is that Disney has seemed to push new buyers in to getting the UY that comes next to allow them to qualify for 2009 UY points, which are sometimes billed as "bonus" points.

I teach but we most likely travel in summer and if not, it would be fall when we reitre, so we went with a June UY.

While cancellations are rare and travel can change in the future, knowing that you will be traveling during a set time for many years makes choosing a UY much more important, IMO.

Good luck!

Thanks for all your help. I spoke to my guide a little while ago about changing use year to Dec. She was very understanding and said she will call back in the morning. I would be so happy if she is able to do this with no changes to my present incentives. Wish me lots of Pixie Dust!!!

I agree with the input from other posters -- December would be better. My wish is for pixie dust which ensures you don't have the same guide I do!

If the UY can't be changed, it's not the end of the world. It's just an aspect of your account that you will manage. We have an October UY and our DVC is held in a family trust used by three families -- two of whom can vacation only during summer months, usually late summer. In 29 trips over six years, we have NEVER had a UY problem, and have never lost points. We just understand our UY and manage accordingly.
