Hi All,
Trying to understand this whole use year thing. I have read a lot about it but I am struggling with the concept in practice I guess!

We are plan on buying DVC resale after our Jan 2017 trip. So we will look to purchase in Feburary and understand this could be a long process that brings us to out to perhaps May 2017.

We would like to use the points we purchase via resale to book at AKV for a trip for sometime between Feb and April 2018. (Of course we will ensure the contract we buy is not stripped and has the points to allow for this).

We think the Feb-April time period will be our normal travel time to Disney for our big annual vacation, with a possibility for an adults only September trip should points allow.

With all that said, when would the best UY be for us if we could pick any? I won't be super picky if I find the right contract otherwise but trying to figure out what makes most sense. I am thinking a UY of May is NOT a good thing right? If we had to cancel out April trip does that means points expire in May and anything that could not be banked is gone?

So perhaps a UY of October? But we know we there is a chance for an adult trip in September.

Ugh..I am probably just reading into this all way too much right?

Set me straight DIS friends!?? Thanks!

Yes, Feb would be the best UY for Feb - Apr travel. Dec (there is no Jan UY) would be the next best for that travel time and so forth moving backwards thru the calendar. June (there is no May UY) would be the worst. Of course, none of this matters if you never have to cancel.

We have a Feb UY and it's still good for travel thru Oct.

Current DVC rules allows you to bank during the first 8 months of your UY. Pick a UY that covers the 8 months that you would usually vacation. Some would pick Feb which covers Feb - Sept, others might choose a Sept UY which covers the cooler months of Sept - April.

I will admit that I'm not an owner but I have been puzzling over the same question recently. I realised that if I ever want to travel at the end of the month before my use year and the beginning of the month of my actual use year (same trip) then I would have badly timed my use year. It sounds like February would be good for you but if you ever want to travel January to February overlapping, keep this in mind for banking and borrowing if you're moving points around for wait lists etc.

We travel a lot to Disney in March-April but also December, so a December UY works well for us.

We have 2 UY's, Apr and Oct. The Apr was a mistake by a newbie. Oct works well for us because we like the cooler months and Christmas each year. We also do F&G and Halloween on occasion and the Oct UY, Oct - May works for us.

As stated Feb would be best because it's perfect for the Feb to April trip and OK for Sept. If you need enough points to do 2 UY, that can be a consideration. I would specifically hold out for Feb in this situation. OTOH if the Sept trip is likely to happen and more likely to have issues, that could change the best answer.
