Total Irish Luck here....

Last evening, Our main LG flatscreen TV just turned off......Looking closer, our other one in the kitchen isn't working as well! Turned to the internet to see that it is a common problem with these flatscreens!

They are both 5 years old, both installed on the same day....Anyway we are trying to fix & diagnose it ourselves...HOPEFULLY it is a bad power supply capacitor...At least this is the main thing the mr. fix it websites are telling us it is...Hubby has already gone off to radio shack! I can't imagine if it doesn't work - total budget buster having to get 2 new tv's!!!

we had that same problem with our samsung, it was only a year old at the time. My husband went to radio shack for capacitor and sauldering(sp) tool. When he opened the tv he coul
d see which part was blown. Easy fix he said, he never touched the tv to fix it before. TV was fixed(except for the glasses he left inside) and has been fine for 2 years now! Any questions I can ask him, let me know.........good luck!

I have to admit this post reinforces something I've believed for a long time. Appliances, cell phones and electronics have a life built into them. It amazes me how many phones I've had that seem to die right around the time that the contract is up for renewal. I just don't believe that the 2 year mark is a coincidence. :confused3

My first thought when I read your post was "power surge". Unless both are hooked up to surge suppressors, that might be a thought. It might be worth inquiring if any nearby neighbor experienced anything similar.:confused3

Good Luck, sounds like you are on the right track. We inherited my prents55inch TV when the power supply went bad. It cost us only about $200 and we have a brand new to us TV. DH had never done any TV repirs but he and the neighbor took care of it pretty quickly once he got the part.

Ugh that totally sucks. I'm sorry :goodvibes

You might get some power strips (extension cords) with built in on-off switches as well as perhap surge protectors.

Turn off the switch when the equipment is not in use for a long period of time.

Just cuts down on the chance of damage from power surges.

Have you at any time experienced lights becoming abnormally bright? (most easily noticed with incandescent lights). This is due to a defect somewhere in the electrical system ranging from at the receptacle the light was plugged into all the way up to the transformer up on a utility pole and serving your house and a few neighbors' houses. This is called a "broken neutral condition" and can fry all kinds of electronics.

I use to work for a company that made components for GE. Our stuff mostly went into refrigerators and each component we made had a projected life span of 6 to 8 years (depending on the item). So yes they do design in an expiration date.
