Using Vacation Points For Moderate Resorts?

I was just wondering if anyone uses vacation points for moderate resorts? Even in the off season w/ a standard view, a moderate is at least 16 points (18 w/ water view). I've stayed at the moderates and found that quite nice....but at the same time, a studio would be 8 points at OKW. Even at BWV w/ a boardwalk view, it would be less than 16 points.

I would see the advantage if the moderates were 5 or 6 points a night. (But, Disney doesn't want DVC members to stay in moderates - they need moderates for the paying guests!) So, I really don't see the advantage in vacation ponts for moderates? Even for deluxes, it seems that paying cash would be a better option. Am I missing something here?

By far your best value is using your points at the DVC resorts. It is just not cost justified to use your points elsewhere including usually weekends at Vero and HH. To get the most value you should always compare the cash price of the night versus renting out the points especially if the 25% cash discount for DVC members is available at the DVC resort. We just got back from HH and on the weekends were being valued at less than $6 per point versus the DVC discount so we paid cash.

When you book outside of DVC, DVC has to turn around and rent a DVC room through CRO to get the cash to compensate the resort you stayed at. That is why they charge more points.

I'd rather stay in a DVC studio anytime before spending points on a moderate hotel room. :sunny:

We are using our points to stay at POR in October, Columbus day weekend. We found that the weekend points were cheaper there for that weekend that at the regular DVC resorts.
