Using TS credits for QS Meals

We are going on our next trip to the World Sept. 6 -13. My MIL, FIL and two nephews are joining us. We are both booked in Standard POP rooms with FD. I chose to upgrade to reg. FD; however MIL did not. She and FIL have recently been placed with a foster child whom they are more than likely going to be adopting and she will be joining us as well. Since MIL is at full occupancy in their room at POP, I offered to add the child to our reservation since there are only three of us (DH, DD and myself). I understand that she will have upgraded FD since we added her to our package, but can she use her 7 TS credits for QS meals? I know that this devalues the upgrade, but MIL and family are doing all QS and I am sure that the child will want to do all of her meals with them. I was pretty certain that she could but when I mentioned it to the CM he told me that I absolutely could not :confused3

No, there's no trading TS for CS. Sorry. :( Would they be willing to upgrade their dining plan?

I've read posts where people have said it used to be done at the cashier's discretion. In other words, it was hit or miss if you would get someone willing and knowledgable enough to do it. With the degradation of the dining plan and increasing monkeyshines of Disney's systems I would highly doubt if you could do it now.

I went ahead and asked to speak with a CM in dining who told me the same so I asked to speak to a supervisor who confirmed that you can use TS credits for QS meals...but not the other way around. In 2012, we ended up using 2 of our TS credits or QS credits because our DD got sick and didn't feel like sitting through a sit down meal. I just wanted to confirm that I could as I was unsure that it was still allowed. Not saying that you're wrong...but the supervisor did confirm that we could so I'm hoping that he's right. Upgrading to the regular DP isn't an option for my MIL and her family as it's not in the budget. Either way, we'll make it work.

Another thought... you could wait to add her to your reservation.

At Check-in just give them the information of the "other" person staying in your room. I did this before when a friend stayed in our room but didn't want to purchase the entire package with us. They would have to buy tickets and food for her separately, but it may be a cheaper option. At least its something to look into. Good luck.

The potential problem with that is the child would not have a valid reservation and therefore could not go on magic express (if they are taking it).
Op although I have no doubt you were told it was ok by the phone cm, I would not be suprised if when you got to them park it was not allowed. Phone cm often give incorrect information. I would have a plan B

What you could do instead is do less QS meals for your family. All the credits are pooled for each reservation. So if you're staying 7 nights, it's # of people on the reservation x 7. Maybe your family could do another TS meal to "save" the quick service credits for the other?

I agree with a few others that even if told it will work, in reality it might not. One other though is she might like to join your family for a few meals. I see you have a DD too, so maybe a break from the other boys would be fun for both girls,

Actually.... yes she can! All they have to do is call MDE diectly and alert them that an additional member is traveling with them to their resort. We did this for my friend who was arriving on a different flight/day than us and we had no problem.

Just be sure to call the DME number and not the call center (the call center people have no clue what they are talking about;) )

To use the service you are suppose to be a guest of a Disney resort. Unless you are registered you are not a guest. Your friend may have been given an exception but it should not be planned on nor expected every time.

What are the ages of your DD and the new child? I like the idea of y'all using her TS credits and she getting your QS credits. She would just have to use her MB to charge her meals separately from the rest of the family.

Edited to add:

4 people x 7 nights = 28 TS and 28 QS for a total of 56. You will each get 7 TS and 7 QS, but you could split it differently and the new child would get 14 QS and you 3 would each get 10 TS and 4 QS. But I think y'all would all have to "adults" for that to work.

They ARE a guest of a Disney resort. lol. I don't understand why you are missing the connection. You will be adding the person to the room upon check-in, this makes them a guest.

The people at DME are great about this stuff, hence why I suggested calling them directly.

The extra person isn't a guest until they're registered on the reservation at check-in though.

This, until they are add to the registration they are not a guest of WDW.

The phone CMs are notorious for giving out incorrect information, add that to the park CMs often not knowing the correct information and you can never predict what will/won't be allowed.

I'm sure some places will allow you to use a TS credit at a CS location, but I would also be prepared to pay OOP when they say no.

I realize that the phone CMs are notorious for giving incorrect information... but I'm speaking from experience. We HAVE done this without issue before. Not saying that it HAS to be done, but was trying to give another thought to the equation. It may not be everyone's solution but it CAN be done.

Just because it has been done in one case doesn't mean it will be done in another. I can't just decide today to hop on the next plane to orlando and take magic express to a Disney resort assuming I can register for a room when I get there. A guest is not a guest until they have a reservation. I believe you are the one not quite understanding when a person is considered a guest of a wdw resort.

I think this is certainly an option. If the child is not already a "Disney Adult" the OP can pay to upgrade her and she and her DH can use her TS credits at the very least.

From my experience at Disney..this is what I believe may bee some issues with having MIL's child on your reservation..

1. Whatever the dining plan she is linked to your reservation. So if she is dining with your MIL and FIL and not with you (which I guess will be the case at least one meal a day when you had TS and MIL has QS) they will have to order separate for her and swipe her Magic band for he meal as her credits will not be on their bands. I am assuming a child can use their Magic band for their meal credits.

2. As far as adding her later...forget about ME and such...if she is not on the reservation within 48hrs of arriving she will not be able to get ANY dining plan...free or not. We were at WDW when Sandy happened on free dining. Our flight got cancelled and we had to stay at Disney for extra days. We were able to book a room for the extra nights but COULE NOT continue our free dining or even purchase a new dining plan for remainder of trip. We were told that you have to add dining plan to you reservation at least 48 hours before you arrive. And even in our special circumstance of cancelled flights dues to natural disaster we could not buy a dining plan. So if you add the girl too late she may not get any dining plan. It may be different since you already have a reservation, but I don't know.

3. I am assuming even though you are traveling together your family and MIL's family are not spending the majority of your time together as you will have ADRS for TS and they won't.

Here's a stupid question....Did you explain the situation to Disney that you are 2 related families traveling together, but because of room occupancy you needed to split the members among 2 rooms...and would it be possible to keep MIL's foster daughter on QS plan on MILs Magic Band account and you, DH and DD will have upgrade to DDP?

Unfortunately, sometimes the best and only thing to do is go ahead with your plan and see what happens when you get there. Sometimes it's easier to get a straight answer and solve a problem when you're there in person then over the phone.
