Is it possible to book flights using someone who won't be flying's credit card??

Only reason I ask is I don't have a credit card, and would like the protection when booking flights so am going to see if my mum or dad will let me use their credit card to book. Would this cause any problems??

OK, so I don't want to seem like this is sarcastic or anything....

Why don't you get a credit card?

It'll be a lot better for making purchases whilst abroad, and will also be a lot better for making your disney reservation on.

I always pay off my card as soon as I use it, but I buy all big purchases on credit, and also use it on holiday, not my debit.

It is possible :-) I've never paid for a flight yet! My ex lives in Florida and he always books them, as long as your details are correct and they forward you the confirmation email you're good to go :thumbsup2

Mehhh to be honest I don't need one. I use my debit card for absolutely everything, I'm 21, still live with parents, finished uni with no debts.

I just have no use for it, all my money is in my account and get spent directly from it :confused3 Have considered it before but don't wanna get into debt when I don't need it, lol.

It's not debt though, not if you pay it off.

And it's so much safer than buying on debit.

AND using a credit card and paying ti off well actually builds your credit rating, so when you don't want to live with your parents anymore you'll have a better credit score against your name.

I use my credit card for everything I buy, and then pay it off weekly, seems like hassle, but it works for me. And if we hadn't have done that we'd be stuffed from our XL flights last year!

I agree that having a CC nowadays is definately a sensible precaution, especially when making purchases over the internet. We also use it when on holiday for any delicate or expensive items just for the added insurance it offers us.
Another way we tend to look at it is that if someone gets hold of your CC, or CC details and clones it, it isn't actually your money they are having a spending spree with - unlike if they got hold of your debit card. (it's never happened to us so I can only imagine how long it might take a bank to replace any money taken from your account via a cloned card)
Having a CC for us isn't about having credit - it's more about peace of mind.

I just booked some flights with BA, and it does say on the confirmation 'you need to bring the bookers debit/credit card to the airport with you' - ok if your parents are taking you to the airport, but not sure about coming home?

Only for 1 purchase really, would never use it again. Plus by the time I had applied for one my flight prices would probably be gone so.

Yes, you can. I buy flights in other people's names regularly when I'm not travelling with them and never had an issue - have done so with Easyjet, Swissair and VA in the past week or so... Only thing I would say is some airlines charge a fee for using a credit card but don't for using a debit card...

You are right of course - but then other deals will always come up and if your card is tucked nicely away somewhere you will have flexibility next time. :thumbsup2

You'll be fine :) I used my dad's card to book all the components of mine and my sister's 2007 DLRP trip and had no problems. I did take the card with me just in case anyone needed to see it but was never asked.

Thanks guys, I thought it would be fine :) I've never had to show any credit/debit card for flights before so.

Now the hard part of persuading 1 of my parents to let me "borrow" their card, lol.

I think I would still apply for one then you have for future and if you don't want to get into debt on set up a direct debit so it is automatically paid in full every month.

We do the bulk of our spending on the credit card and it is paid off in full by direct debit :thumbsup2

It's worth remembering a cc is not for everyone. Personally I couldn't have a credit card, I wouldn't trust myself with one. I have bad credit so doubt I could get one anyway, but even if I could I wouldn't. So peace of mind for me is NOT having a credit card and not adding to the debt I already have.

I do have a pre-paid credit card. No chance of going over what's in your account and it's Mastercard (fairfx, but there are £ ones too) so is treated like any other credit card.

I can use someone else's credit card to book my flights? Woohoo! Now, who's gonna give me their details? ;)

Seriously, whilst it's true that debit cards don't offer the levels of protection afforded by credit cards under the Consumer Credit Act, Visa does operate a voluntary scheme (to which all its debit cards providers subscribe) which does provide a degree of protection. Maestro debit cards don't. No matter what debit card you have, though, under UK legislation, if it's used fraudulently you're not liable at all. Whilst some unscrupulous banks (that's all of them, then ) might lead you to believe otherwise, don't be fooled. It's such a common misconception that I suspect many bank staff aren't aware of the truth.

The pre-loaded card did occur to me as an option, but I doubt you'd receive the protection of the CCA. Technically it's a debit card as you're not receiving credit - you're using your own money.

Banker hat off. :teeth:

Scottish Girl - I definitely suggest getting a fairfx card for your trip.

I don't like to use my debit card abroad or online just as a security measure, so Fairfx would be a great idea for you. I ordered mine last week. :)
