using reward points to pay for package in advance

(I asked this question on the Resorts board and was told to wait and spend the money while in Florida. However, I will have very little need to spend once I'm there as my package includes hotel, passes, food)

Final payment on my package is due 45 days before I leave. I know I can use reward points towards the cost. Does anyone know what happens to those points if I must cancel the reservation? I know I'd get the dollars back (minus fee) on my credit card but will the points go back on to the reward card?

I called the Disney Visa customer service and the lady said the reward points would show up on my credit card in the form of dollars. I find that difficult to believe... we could all "book" a package, use reward points to pay, cancel the package and have the points to spend on anything, whether Disney related or not...

I would think that the reward dollars will be appropriately deducted from your account once you cancel. In other words, it should go back into your stash of reward dollars. I don't think it stays as free money/cash. If they can tell if you book a DIsney package and delay interest payments for 6 months, they'll be able to tell if you cancel and replenish your reward dollars cache.
