Using RCI

My mom, sister, DD and nephew are looking to head to WDW during my spring break from school in April (14th-18th). While discussing using mom's RCI points to book off property, she mentioned the ability to trade for a week at OKW. Can anyone offer experience using RCI or another timeshare to book at Disney? Thanks in advance! :thumbsup2

I am interested in this also as I have an RCI timeshare that I would love to use at Disney!!

I would be interested in knowing also. I have a friend who has RCI and says she can get me a week at Disney next year. I am waiting.

I have done this twice, most recently today actually! My suggestion is to set up an "ongoing search" on RCI and enter all WDW resorts - you can do this online or by calling RCi and having them help you. I booked in April for a November stay last time and had several choices of resorts for my week. This year I set up the search in March and nothing for October showed up until this weekend, and I had actually been told by the rep that my chance of getting a DVC less than a year in advance was slim. So, I would set up the search ASAP and wait until you can't possibly hold out any longer - there will always be something on RCI I am sure, but it may not be higher than a 2 star if you wait too long.

All on going searches can be set up two years in advanced. Getting it set up ASAP is key, as that secures your place in line higher than those entering the searches later. You won't see a hit on the search until around 7 months as Disney does not deposit their units with the exchange service until around that time.

While I agree, it sounds like some of those above are using RCI points resort where you can only book when available starting at 10 months out.

It can be done but I wouldn't count on April or a 2 BR. Also, if they have anything in their account that originates in Orlando, they would no be able to reserve or would likely have any booked reservation canceled later. Once you get to about 5 months out, I'd add other options to the exchange search in addition to DVC. I've had many units at DVC both with II and RCI but you must be flexible and generally not need a 2 BR.

I agree that you should set up an ongoing search. I had trouble locating the Disnet resorts online so I just called - really easy. Not saying it is always easy, because it does depend on what resort you are swapping RCI. I called RCI yesterday and set up a search for Mardi Gras week (I live in south Louisiana and the kids are out of school the whole week of Mardi Gras). About a half hour after I got off the phone, I logged back into RCI to see if they had updated my account, and there was already a week at Saratoga Springs showing available. I booked it and now I'm set. That was extremely quick, not saying it is always that quick.

We used my mom's Hilton Grand points and traded through RCI for OKW this past February. We had a party of 7 and got a 2-bedroom. The search was in there for over a year. We had a search for OKW, BWV, BCV, & VWL because those were the ones we wanted a shot at. OKW came up first and we grabbed it. The experience itself was painless--except waiting to see what opened up and when. I want to say, but don't remember for sure, that it opened up about 7 months out. Once you're onsite you're treated just like a DVC member. Actually, I met up with some friends while down there who were DVC members and our key cards/tickets looked exactly like theirs. The only thing I had "trouble" with was calling in advance for questions, reservations, Magical Express, etc. I almost always got conflicting answers on what department/company (DVC Member Services, RCI, etc.) I was "supposed to" talk to, even though DVC Member Services, I was told on my first call to them ever, could handle any request or inquiry I had--it was only on subsequent calls that the cast members would tell me that. You will also need to get a Disney confirmation number, which is not the same as the number you get from RCI--again, if I remember corrrectly. Once you have that Disney confirmation number, things will go much smoother if you have advanced needs/requests. Good luck! OKW was our first on-property resort experience, we FELL IN LOVE with the property and now we are planning on becoming DVC members and making OKW our "home." :goodvibes

We have exchanged into DVC and have gotten:
2 BR BWV
2 BR BLT
1 BR BLT
1 BR BCV
1 BR OKW
1 BR AKV
1 BR SSR (3 times)

It's possible but you have to be diligent & patient and be willing to stay elsewhere (or be flexible with your dates) if it doesn't come up!
It appears different timeshares exchanging in have different rules. We have NEVER had anything come up from an ongoing search. Always have just seen it and booked it. Supposedly the ongoing search inventory is different and that's why the search never picked it up. Anyone know about that?

I just got my first RCI exchange into DVC on Wednesday -- an OKW TWO bedroom for 12/14-12/21, 2013.

Needless to say, we are thrilled! :cool1:

We placed an ongoing search in May for an OKW 2 BR only -- no other resorts/no other size unit -- but with a wide set of acceptable dates from September through 12/31. I used Wyndham points through RCI Weeks.

We got a match first for a week in September almost immediately and I was thinking, "Wow, that was easy!" But those dates conflicted with an important event at my wife's work so we released that one.

This Wednesday we got probably the best possible match for us, considering holiday stuff we have coming up.

Based on my limited experience, plus what I've read from experienced folks, my advice is as follows:
  • Do an ongoing search, started as early as you can.
  • Do NOT ask for ANY DVC - specify the resorts you really want or you're gonna get SSR, which is not what I would want. YMMV.
  • Use as wide a range of acceptable dates as you can. If you can only go one particular week, it is what it is. But if you can list a range of weeks, you can always release offers with no penalty in the hopes of getting something better.

I had trouble locating the Disnet resorts online ...
Here's a list of the RCI resort codes for the WDW DVC resorts, courtesy of one of Brian Noble's posts over on TUG:
