Using points for the Poly? Bad or OK?

Looking ahead....

We were gonna do the cruise (using cash) and was thinking about following it up with a stay at the Poly using points. (I've never stayed there and want to really bad!)

I looked at rack rates and compared it to points. If I rented out my points at $10 it was about the same for the Poly. For that year we won't have an AP so I wouldn't be able to get that discount.

Thoughts? Bad idea to use points or OK? I know it is better to stay at a DVC resort, but this would be something special, not a typical trip for us.

Thanks!

Shan, there is "traditional wisdom" here on the boards about what is a good use of points and what is not. For the most part, you get the most bang for your buck when you stay at a DVC property. That said, if you want to go to the Poly and the cost is prohibitive and using points gets you there, what BETTER use of points? Go for it!

We are going to the Poly in June and I am paying cash. It's expensive (even with big disounts) and if we weren't having some of it paid by Scott's employer, I would NEVER shell out this amount of money. I would hoard points and pay that way. If you can swing the points, do it. You can save some by avoiding weekends.

Have fun!

My 2 cents worth. If you have the points that have already been paid for, then use them. We have done the cruise and AKL on points and don't regret it one bit. In February we stayed at BWV for 5 nights and then went to AKL for 2 nights. AKL was about 70 points, it was a great resort and a fun time.

My question to you is, "What is it worth to you (& your family) to stay at the Poly using DVC points?"

If I read your original post correctly, then I think you answered this question"

* "I've never stayed there and want to really bad!"

* "this would be something special, not a typical trip for us"

You bought points to have a vacation. If you feel it is worth it you & your family, then go for it! Personally, I feel life is too short - go for it & enjoy!!

I don't look at my points as money. We wouldnt be going away as much if we were paying cash for these vacations. I use my points as luxury entertainment.

DH and I had the cruise booked on points last year and had to cancel. We have to use the points by July 31st or they are history. That ain't going to happen so what's a girl to do? I booked a stay for me and my sister at the Grand Floridian. It may not be the best use of points but it's use them or lose them.

I'm really looking forward to staying at GF again and not having a bill when I check out will just be the icing on the cake! The Poly is a beautiful resort and you'll have a great time there and no bill when you check out. Enjoy your trip!

Hi! I agree with the others. I say, Go for it. I stayed at the Poly twice before, years ago, on cash and loved it. Now that we are DVC members, I too, recently was thinking about a short stay at the Poly on points and then moving to a DVC Villa. I also looked at the rack rate and saw you basically break even using points. Therefore, I think it is worth it especially if you have never been and would like to.

Good luck and have Fun!!

I have used points for Poly concierge, and will again in the future. We are also using points for AKL weekend concierge next month during peak season.

Need I say more? ;)

Enjoy your points... That's why you bought them!!!! :D

My husband and I just returned from the Poly last week. We stayed 5 nights in a lagoon view room. We were in Tuvalu.

We loved the Poly. We also felt that is was not a bad use of points for value received.

We did not have to take cash out of our pocket. Our bill at the end of our stay was very small.

The Poly has a location that can not be beat. The activity on the lagoon, the fireworks, and the sound of the train and the openning of the Magic Kingdom could be heard and seen from our room!!

We love our home at the VWL, but everyone should stay at the Poly at least once!

We are using points to stay at AKL Deluxe Savannah View - 43 pts per weekday night versus cash rate of $431 tax included - so points valued at about $10 per

If the room view had been available for the nights we wanted under AP discount would have been $302 for the room or $7.04 per point

In either case, the implied point value was more than the cost I abscribe to our points (which is the straight line depreciation + mtce fees or roughly $6 a point)

It would have been too much work (and that is the key word) to wait (i.e. not plan the trip fully out  )call CRO/WTDC check for the AP rates on the nights we wanted for the room type, book for cash and then rent the points out

The key for us is the ability to plan in advance so we say the use of our DVC points for Disney collection as totally ok. Now if it had been Friday/Saturday nights, we probably would have saved/banked/rented the points and paid cash due to the weekend premium being high in the Disney Collection

thanks

You know they are your points, use them as you want! we are going to stay at the Poly concierge for my 40th B-day in 2005. Use them, that's what they are there for!!:earseek:
