Can you use your points at non-DVC hotels, like the Polynesian or the Grand Floridian? What about on Disney Cruise Line? And if you can, how does it work? How many points does it usually take per night?

yes you can and it alot more points than DVC resorts.
I will try to find a chart for you to see.But some of them will Scare you:scared1:

i would never use my points for those places because some of them are like up to 50 points a night:scared1:

I'm staying at the Paradise Pier in Disneyland for 20 points a night (S-Th) in late April. California Adventure park view. Rack rate for 5 nights $1,552 including tax (vs 100 points).

The points required for DVC resorts are fairly stable each year, only changing as the holidays hit. Points required for the non-DVC stays are negotiated each year and have a tendancy to go up each year. You get get a DVC one bedroom at OKW for about what it requires to stay at a moderate resort in a standard room. Two double beds in one tiny room versus one king, one queen sleeper sofa and separate bedroom, living room, dining room and kitchen, plus a huge porch. Not difficult to make that choice.

And, don't forget the $95 fee for using your points at a non-DVC resort.

If you want to (very) occasionally stay at a non-DVC resort, it's not an awful thing. But if you plan to stay at non-DVC resorts as much or more than DVC resorts, I think you're going to be disappointed. The WDW resorts, especially, have such a high point cost that you'd probably come out better if you paid cash.

Just a caveat to this. If you book one of the 3 DLR hotels, there is still no fee for using your points. I also believe that they are waiving the requirement that you can't book and travel within the last 4 months of your use year.

This will most probably change when GCV opens...
