Using points for Mexico

Has anyone ever used their points for a Mexico vacation? We would like to go to Cancun and are thinking of just using points. Any feedback on resorts? Are they kid friendly? Thanks!

We are staying at the Royal Sands October 25-November 1 in a 1 bedroom at the Royal Sands. It cost us 140 points. The Royals are tops on the list for Timeshares in Mexico. I have done a lot of reading about them through TUG and Tripadvisor and everything indicates that they aer very kid friendly. We are all very excited for our upcoming trip.

There are 4 resorts in Cancun I'd consider trading DVC points for, the 4 Royals. They are great resorts, in many ways, better than DVC. If you can make do with a 1 BR, your chances of success are greater plus they are some of the few resorts where I can tell you an upgrade to a larger unit is a possiblility if not likely. I would not do a studio there, while they are listed as efficiencies, they really are more just hotel rooms type lockoff's. For the rest of Mexico, there are few resorts I'd list. The ones that come to mind are the Royal Hacienda south of Cancun, the 3 Premier rated resorts on the list for Puerto Vallarta, and the Dorado for Cabo. There are a few others I'd stay at but not at the cost of DVC points. RCI has more and better when it coms to Mexico. Some of the independent exchange companies have a lot of Mexico options as well, esp San Francisco Exchange and Trading Places Intl.

We got our match recently also for th Royal Sands. I did the same as Melissa - read up on it on TUG and Tripadvisor - Dean also has great info., maps of area, etc.

We are going July 09 - 2 BDR - 270 points. I put the search in 9/07 and it came through April/May 08 (I can't remember exactly at this moment). My brother is still waiting for his 1 BDR to come through for the same time.

Sorry, one more question. How do I know when a match is made? I was online tonight and it looks like the 160 points have been taken out of our account for our sping break trip but I can't see any vacation details. I will call MS in the morning but was wondering if there was any way to see which resort we matched with.

You'll have to call or wait until you get the II confirmation.

The same exact thing happened to me. I called the next business day and found out that the match had been made. Good Luck!

We got a match for the Royal Mayan for Spring Break 2009. It took about two months for a match. Although not our first choice we are still happy to be going to Cancun!

It's a great resort, some think it has the most character of any of the resorts in the group. Just realize you will likely get a lagoon view. Here is a page with the resort map on it.

Please post a report when you return!!! Interesting that July,Aug are high season there even though there is always a threat of hurricane activity..
August is when we normally travel too!
