I don't have DVC points, but I am considering them. My biggest interest is using them for DCL cruises. Do any of you have advice?

Thanks!
Joyce

a lot of people will say dont use your points for dcl. i just used some points for a cruise a few weeks ago. at a dvc member party on the cruise they saidthere was 130 rooms people paid for with points or partial paid for with points. a lot of people will say sell your points than pay for your cruise im not into all of that, so i just paid with points.
in fact i just bought some points so i can go on a 14 night cruise next year.
i bought 130 take the 130=390 for 2006,2007,2008 points.
i only needed 117 but they had the annual pass special going on.
i was going to buy some more when my house is paid off in 4 years just bought it a little earlier.
if your thinking about using dvc for dcl sometimes get ssr with the lower maint fees. a point is a point for dcl is doesnt matter if you own at a resort with low maint fees or high maint fees.

In the long run, it's cheaper to just pay cash for the cruise than to use points. We used points in 2001 to go on the cruise (4 nights) and we used all our current year points and borrowed points as well. We wound up buying more points while we were at WDW on that trip. We bought more again the next year.

We are going cruising (7 nights) this coming spring. We're paying case because, again, we would use all our current year points and borrow from the next. For three of us in a Cat 6 room it was a lot of points.

We are going on a 4 night cruise in July 2007. When I priced it out with a travel agent that offers a cash rebate upon completing the trip the value of the points were $7 per point. For us it was a lot better to rent out the points and pay cash. Also the cancelation policy on cash is much much much better than points. There were several posts on the boards where someone had to cancel their cruise and regreted using points since now they are stuck with restricted points.

It's a poor cash return plus there are other aggravations and risks. You'd be better off just planning ahead and paying cash and not owning DVC.

Hi Joyce,
We have used our points every time we cruise(4 times), I pay for DH and I with the points and Cash for my 2 DDs. I just prefer it that way although everyone says its not the best use of your points. We usually go every other year and it works out fine. Never have had a problem.
