Using points at locations other than WDW

I'm considering purchasing, and one thing my DH likes about the direct purchase is using points at some of our nearby ski resorts (Colorado) I'm just wondering if anyone has used the RCI group and if it's easy to use/worth it.

You can book RCI with resale points, not necessary to pay the extra for direct.

And you might not be able to get prime locations during prime times. More like prime winter location in middle of summer. Rent out your points or buy fewer points and pay cash for those non-DVC trips. DVC points are pretty expensive to use for non-DVC trips.

Worth it? Not as a planned regular use. RCI trade value rarely covers your sunk cost in dues.
