We have decided to use most of our AKV points at HHI over the next several years. We will be traveling in the off-season. My plan is to book a studio at 11 months out with our HHI points and then try for a 1-BR at 7 months out using our AKV contract for the additional points. So, if I have a studio booked, would I at the 7-month mark modify the reservation to use different points? Would I choose my current HHI points first and then would it allow me to use my AKV contract next without having to borrow HHI points?

wouldn't you have to drop and try to re-pick it up and hope no WL fills? And since it's offseason, you shouldn't be in too much risk if it's sold out at the 7month marker. Dangerous game, but do-able.

I was thinking I wouldn't have to cancel. Wouldn't modifying work? That way if I can't get the 1-BR, I would still have the studio.

Yes you could just modify once you are within 7 months. You would select which contracts you wish to use (assuming they are the same membership that is).

If you modify, HH contract will be locked. Just chose the AKV contract as well.

It will then use HH first..as you had already done..and then use AKV points to finish.

Since you will be doing it at 7 months, it will not require any borrowing as long as you have other points.

I don't know if this is advisable, but I'd call member services and tell them what you want to do and let them work their magic at 7months . I own at OKW & SSR, we book OKW @ 11months, as many nights as I can get then at 7month call and tell them I want to add my SSR points and extend the res, they see what I have, understand what I want to do and set it up. Of course, we go in Jan and OKW is huge, but it has always worked out booking up to 17nights in a one bedroom, same room. Most people don't care to deal with member services but I love them.

Once you get them on the phone MS is usually very helpful, it’s the waiting on hold to speak to them that I find problematic. On 12/29 my hold time was 1 1/2 hours, on 1/4 it was 45 minutes.

Not sure I would want to chance waiting the hour to call MS. Plus I just had a terribly frustrating experience when MS cancelled my AKV value studio for next month when I called to ask them a question that related to POSSIBLY cancelling. Miracles of miracles, they were able to get it back. But WOW!!! As bad as the DVC website is, I'd rather take my chances and modify online.

I must be lucky, I got in yesterday 1/9, at about 1:30, my wait time was about 18mins and I booked two stays at OKW & SSR both in Dec. This cast member even had some suggestions that helped stretch my stay and how exactly to combine my points at the 7 month mark to get what I ultimately wanted to do. I must say that I'm also retired after forty years in the heavy highway construction field building roads and airports so have time on my hands and my computer skills are limited so calling MS is safer for me, heck, I don't even use a cell phone, have one, but don't use it.
