We've only been to Disney once - about 10 years ago (before Fastpass). I've tried to plan (from suggestions on these forums) - of which park on which day. I really don't want to make a specific schedule with specific rides at specific times - however - there will be 5 of us 2 adults, 2 older teens and a 4 yo. I want to make the most out of our trip without being a slave to a schedule.

I've read so much about fastpass - but my question is - is it fairly easy to use and plan? I mean - do you have to travel all around the park just to use it? Or - while walking from attraction to attraction - can you use the fastpass when you want?

I would imagine it would cut your wait time down signficantly - but I don't want to assign someone the task of tracking down fastpasses - and missing out on family fun.

You have to get Fastpasses at the attraction you want to use them at. First-come, first-served. You can not select a time.
It only takes a few seconds, though, and there's at least one FP attraction in each area. You can get a Fastpass for the FP attraction with the longest line in one area, and then do standby lines for the rest of the attractions in that area (for instance: Get FPs for Pooh, see PhilharMagic, Pan, Carousel, Snow White, teacups, etc before it's time to use the FPs for Pooh)

You can't get more than one fastpass in a row per person, so no one will end up doing a lap around the park to "collect" them, which means that you don't need to worry about one person missing out on family time.

Fastpasses are easily accessible at the entrance to the rides. There's no mistery about where to find them, and when you can use them. They have a return time window that should keep you from rushing around. They are designed to make life easier, keeping you out of the lines and in the shops and restaurants.

They're especially useful if you have a familly member or two that doesn't like going on some of the fastpass rides. When you fastpass you can spend more time with them and less time in line away from them. You'll get the hang of them pretty quick.
