Using Duct Tape in your Stateroom?

Just wondering....does DCL mind when guests use duct tape, or for that matter, anything that actually sticks to their walls, curtains, cabinets, etc?

I've used this stuff at home, and it can definitely leave a sticky residue. I've read some posts about people using it to close curtains, seal portholes, etc. Doesn't it leave marks?

Or, maybe it's a 'brand' thing (maybe there's a duct tape brand that does not leave a gummy mess).

Hi

Sorry I dont know the answer to your question, But I just had to ask what is duct tape? :confused3

I don't know exactly how to describe duct tape, but it's EXTREMELY sticky. It's mostly used by people who work in the HVAC field, or electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc.

I would never use that on walls or doors on the ship...it does leave a sticky mess behind! Our closet doors slammed back and forth one rough night and we just put a towel in the tracks of the doors instead of making a mess with duct tape.

I've often wondered what these people are thinking when they are putting duct tape all over everything. I can only assume that it leaves a sticky mess. Perhaps they are not actually using duct tape but some other kind of tape.

If you want to use duct tape on your personal stuff (luggage, to hem a dress, etc) that's your own thing. But using it on the ship is going to end up causing a huge mess. It's going to go from glamorous to trailer park. And the prices are going to go up because of all of the goo gone they have to use to get it off.

And for those of you who are "light sensitive" and tape the curtains shut, perhaps you should look into these fabulous cabins they have which do not have windows. :)

sorry for the rant.. it's one of those days I guess.

We booked one of those fabulous rooms without a window, however there is nothing you can do when Disney chooses to upgrade you at the port. I had a feeling they would, just my luck, so I packed black trash bags and duct tape just in case. I taped the bags together and then taped it above the window. I then pulled them back each day and used a clothes pin to hold it back. It worked great especially when we needed to nap. I can go back to sleep when it wakes me up, however when my 4 year old sees daylight, there is no going back. The tape left nothing behind and did no damage to the finish on the wall. I believe you run into that problem when you leave duct tape on for long periods of time or subject it to heat. We left it there for the 7 days and took it down ourselves and left no damage.

I used it on a 7-day cruise to tape an electrical extension cord to the carpet on the floor so no one would trip over it. It held great and left no residue after seven days.

Clothespins or butterfly-type paper fasteners work better for holding curtains closed.

That's probably the key....not leaving it on for any length of time.

I think I'm going to bring clothespins, though. It would be just my luck to be the one who destroyed the finish on the walls or cabinet

My question is, do cabins with portholes not have curtains? We have booked a cat 8 with a porthole window and just wondering what the trashbags are for if there are curtains. We had a balcony on our last cruise and the curtains were all we needed. However, if no curtains, I'll need trash bags and duct tape too!

I've read that there are people who bring WD-40 to get the gummy residue off the walls and window.
It just sounds funny, all the things people bring...duct tape, WD-40, clothespins, extension cords, lysol spray, etc. I wasn't planning on bringing any of these things, but now I'm thinking the last laugh will be on me when I need duct tape for something!

I can only assume (and you what they say about that) the need for trashbags would be to totally block out all light.....be all cabins do have curtains...

I use the big diaper pins with the plastic head (yes, they still sell them!!!) and they work fantastic for a variety of things....I use them to keep towels from blowing off chairs on the veranda (pin cloth to cloth, not to the chair) and they work great for keeping the curtains closed, and I have even used them to fix a pair of pants when the zipper broke...Ok, too much dessert I know.....I keep a few tucked away in our suitcases so we always have them. :flower:

Bad me... :sad2: I had some duct tape in my bag....I used it to stop the lights in the bathroom from rattling....We were located in the stern Cat 6..and the vibration from the stern thrusters....

Just a thought, and I mean no harm in making this comment. If you are goingto take duck tape and a garabge bag (as I read somewhere on the boards) to cover your porthole why pay for a ocean view room? It seems like you would have more money and deal with less hassel with taping garabge bags to the walls with duct tape if you just bought an inside stateroom?

Just my 2 cents, please don't take it the wrong way.....

Not taken the wrong way, however please READ the entire post if you want to provide your 2 cents. I was upgraded at the port. I wanted and paid for a room without a window. I just knew I would get upgraded because that is my luck. I packed accordingly.

Yeah CWF!!!...LUCKY YOU....I understand what you mean about your 4 yo...Break of day means lets get everyone in the house up and PLAY!!! :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Exactly, I am probably the only one on the boat praying not to get upgraded, but I was prepared and all wasy good! I just got a card in the mail that says I was selected to fill out another evaluation form online. My name seems to have come up a lot on this cruise-except of course when it came to winning Bingo! Can't win them all!

We used our duct tape (Duck brand, easy tear version) for two things. One use involved the wall of our cabin and no residue was left behind. We used a little bit of tape to stick the Navigators for the Club's 3-4 year olds and the Lab's 8-9 and 10-12 year olds on the wall. Having them located where we could all see them and they wouldn't get lost was very helpful. The other use did not involve walls or furniture or the like.
