I have rented and I'm planning on using the CARES restraint for our upcoming flight to Disney this Wednesday. I recieve the product in the mail and was reading over installation. It has a different installation for different seat types, regular or recessed tray tables.
does anyone know what type of tray table Delta has? Or you have used the CARES on delta? I am afraid I can't keep my son harnessed through the flight if they are recessed tray tables. Please let me know.:confused3 :confused3

This is going to be a difficult or even impossible question to answer as the tray table type will vary by plane type and even among the same plane type, the seat style can vary depending on when the seats were installed. I'm not sure what else to say. Good luck figuring it out.

I would suggest asking on www.flyertalk.com

Go to miles and points, then to airlines, then ask in the Delta forum. I am sure they will be able to give you an answer.

I fly Delta alot and the planes I've been on have the usual tray tables.

Sorry I can't answer the Delta question, but just wanted to say we used a CARES restraint for our 3 year old son on our last trip to Disney and it was super easy. We flew Northwest and the seats did have recessed trays, but it fit great and the may behind us had no trouble opening or closing his tray. The only trouble we had was that because there wasn't anything between his legs like in a car seat he seemed to slide down and we had to readjust slightly. Not a real issue and he was very comfortable and happy for the 3.5 hour flight both ways. Good luck!

We've used CARES on American and Southwest, and have had no troubles at all. It should work fine with either type of seat.

I've used CARES quite a lot with my son. Have flown internationally.

A recessed tray table is one where the tray table goes into a sort of hole. In this case, the harness goes around (not inside) the tray table. This is not any issue for take-off and landing. The person behind you has to have their tray table stowed away for taxi, take-off, and landing anyway. However, in flight you may have to release the harness so the person behind you can use it. You will find these more on the MD80 series aircraft with Delta.
Delta's 737 and 757 tend not to have recessed tray tables. ie. the tray table folds up flat against the seat. In this situation the loop of the harness goes around the seat (inside the tray table). Have the tray table down to install the harness, then put it up.

BTW, it is good to print off from Delta's website that CARES is allowed on them. Not all Delta flight attendants read their manual updates. If any Delta flight attendants give issue, politely and sternly tell them to look it up in their flight manual under safety restraints. You can even tell them there is a nice picture of it in their manuals. Plus, if the flight attendant is unfamiliar, I would want them to be familiar in case of an emergency.

If you are in a row with three seats, I would probably put the kid in the middle. CARES does not have to be used with a window seat like most car seats. Just remember no exit rows nor 2 rows before or behind an exit.

If there are three of you, you could put you and your son in one row and your DH in the row behind. That way, if you wanted to keep the harness on your son during the flight (a good idea, in case of turbulence), it would by your DH's tray that you'd be affecting.

We have used the CARES device a lot on Delta, never had a problem. The MD88 and MD90 have recessed tray tables, all other fleets have normal tray tables.
