Using borrowed points from cancelled ressie

I'm pretty certain about this but just wanted to double check.

If you have borrowed points from your next UY and need to cancel the reservation (either 31+ days or less than 30) you do have the option to use those points at a non-dvc resort hotel (WDW or DL) with the caveat that at WDW you could not reserve in the last 4 months of your UY, correct?

Correct. You can stay in the last 4 months but the reservation has to be made before the 4 month mark. If they are holding points, you cannot book more than 60 days before arrival.

Newbie questions... what are 'holding' points? If you borrow from the next year and need to cancel, can the points be used the next year?

If you cancel a reservation 30 days or less before the arrival date the points are returned to your account in "Holding" status which means they cannot be banked and can only be used to make a reservation within 60 days of arrival. They will expire at the end of the Use Year.

Borrowed points cannot be banked and will expire at the end of the Use Year into which they were borrowed. Borrowed points cannot be transferred.
