How does using banked points work? I ask because looking some resale contracts I’ve noticed that 2019 points are banked but some of 2020 points are used. Why would someone use 2020 points before 2019? Do you have a choice on which points are used for a trip? Like if I have 240 points- 120 banked from 19 and 120 from 20 and I plan a trip that needs 200 points, does it use all of 19 first so I can then bank the last 40 from 2020?

They probably banked there 2019 points and then decided they wanted a stay after they did it so they borrowed 2020 points to do it since 2019 points can't be borrowed. Or made a reservation with there 2020 UY points before banking 2019. Banked points always get used first but you have to had banked them already

Most likely that person borrowed 2020 UY points for use in their 2019 UY. For some reason, they had to cancel their trip, but once borrowed, the borrow points can't be return to 2020 UY. So, now they have 2020 UY points that will expire in 2019 UY, and can't be banked unlike their normal 2019 UY points. So, they booked a different trip to use up the now expiring borrowed 2020 UY points, and than banked their 2019 UY points into 2020 UY.

Confusing, yes, but that's how it works, to save as much points as possible from expiring. So, in your example, if you have banked points, than you used the 120 points banked from 2019 UY into 2020 UY, and the remaining 80 points from 2020 UY, you now have 40 points left, that you can either use in 2020 UY or bank into 2021 UY.

Hope that helps.

Ha, you beat me to finish posting by a minute. And I didn't even think of your scenario. ZakDavid is right, another possibility is that they may not have planned on a trip originally in their 2019 UY, and banked the points into 2020 UY. But than, changed their mind, but once banked, the points can't be return back to their 2019 UY. So, to take the trip they want in 2019 UY, they ended having to borrow from 2020 UY.

As you can see, lots of things can happen, as life always happen. I cancel many trips that I originally planned on taking, and also ended up taking other trips that I never planned on doing originally. And I usually plan all my trips 1-2 years ahead of time.
