Using a Crock pot or hot plate in rooms?

I called our Disney resort a long time ago and asked if we could use a hot plate in our room, and they said sure. I just did a quick search on these boards to see if anyone uses crock pots in the rooms, and I found an old post about hot plates that said they aren't allowed in any Disney rooms. I was surprised myself when I was told Yes, but now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if I somehow heard wrong.

Does anyone know if it's allowed or not, when needed for medical reasons?

I'm not interested in trying to "get away with it"; I just want to know if it's ever been actually allowed!

(Please no debates about its safety...)

I am not certain, but think it is not allowed according to the fire safety code. The CMs you talk to on the phone (even when you call the resort) are not actually at the resort, they are at a call center. Frequently, the same question can get 3 different answers if you call 3 times.

If you ate staying in one if the moderate resorts, there are
microwaves in the food court - not the same as a crock pot or hot plate, but at least you can safely warm something.

I ould think they are not allowed as wel, you should call the resort directly and ask them. You cna find the numbers for all the resorts at www.allears.net go to accomidations, then on the left side is a list of all the resorts, click fact sheet under your resort and somewhere on that page ( normally at the bottom) will be the number to the resort.

Those numbers do not actually get you the resort. They are a call center answering as if it is the resort.

Thanks for the link...there was a lot of useful information there! It was the resort itself that told me yes to the hot plate before.

Hmm...so is there no way to call the actual resort? Now you have me worried because we were also promised a microwave for medical reasons.

Due to fire code restrictions, cooking appliances are only allowed in the DVC Villas. That is why you do not have kitchens even in the suites on the hotel side of things. Now lots of people use crock pots, toaster ovens, hot plates, etc. and you may or may not get caught, but you could potentially be evicted for using it.

Well, I have to say, I'm getting upset! That I was told on 2 separate occasions over the phone that we could have one in phone calls to what I thought was the direct line to the resort, was a deciding factor in our decision to stay where we did and to even plan the trip at all. It is too late to change anything now, but it will be difficult if not impossible to keep my daughter well without being able to use it.

Why will it be difficult if not impossible to keep your daughter well without a hot plate or crock pot in your room? I have heard of Disney providing a microwave when even the chefs agree that they can't provide safe food for a guest but it is REALLY rare for them to be unable to provide safe food. If you share the actual issue with us then maybe we can help with a solution that can work for you.

Call again to ask one more time. Take down the name of the person you speak with and note the date & time of the conversation. Confirm whether the cooking device that is being approved will be one provided by you or provided by the resort as this is VERY important and may have something to do with fire codes (they may have appliances that are approved?).

Which resort are you staying at?

Think about a coffee maker for a minute. The base under the pot is basically a little hot plate. If it's safe to have a coffee maker in moderate and deluxe resorts then why wouldn't it be safe to have a hot plate? You would have the same fire hazard issues with either if it's left on all day by accident. My point is to make sure you fully understand their rules and document who gave you your approvals. You might even want to see if they'll send you confirmation in writing (email's fine as long as you print it and bring it) to be sure that you have all of your bases covered.

Actually the hot plate in a coffee maker does not get anywhere as hot as a hot plate or electric skillet. Also, the coffeemakers auto shutoff. As far as the building codes go, I do not think they prohibit microwaves as microwaves only draw as much power as a light bulb in most cases and they do not themselves get hot. That is why you see a lot of hotels that now have standard microwaves and frigs, but no cooking appliances.

I can tell you they will not provide a microwave in the value resorts. But I have been told you can request one (for medical) in the moderates.

I don't know who you called to request the microwave, but if you didn't call the Special Reservations Department, you probably should call them to see if they can help you. They are different than calling a random CM at a call center.
If you follow the link in my signature to the disABILITIES FAQs thread. One of the posts in that thread is about resorts and does include the phone number for Special Reservations. If your request is not one they handle, they would be able to help you find the correct place to take care of it for both the microwave and the other questions.
The problem with calling the call center or CRO, is that people are told/promised all sorts of things that those of us on the DIS who have been to WDW frequently or those who are actual CMs know are not possible. I have seen situations where people were promised things that ranged from front of line passes at the park (actually only available for children on Make a Wish or similar trips ) to free guaranteed upgraded rooms (they may put a request for one on your reservation, but that doesn't mean one will be available when you get there).

Also on the disABILITIES FAQs thread, post #3 has information that may be helpful. There is contact information for Special Dietary Needs. Even if your daughter's dietary needs are so specialized that they can't totally meet them, there may be some helpful things available you were not aware of.

Most microwaves are rated between 1,000 and 1,200 watts. That is a lot more than light bulbs.

True, they do not get hot, but the radio waves they generate heat up the liquid inside the food.

I did it in Dec. 2009. Now, it's not easy to do and you still have to call some regular numbers, but in special cases they will connect you directly.

The problem with talking to the resort you will get the back room and not the front desk. The front desk is far more knowledgeable than the back end, but it may help you. This is still not a written guarantee; so, I still feel you need to direct all of this to special needs at guest services.

I feel you should call special needs. I think this is the best avenue; because, they have the power to put special requests in the room reservations.

You haven't explained your situation in whole, but at value resorts there are microwaves in food courts. If you need a hot plate and you can bring your own, there would probably be a place where it would be safe to connect one outside of your room.

Of course, we don't know your exact circumstances, but if it's medical I don't think Disney would refuse you. How they would accomodate you is hard to say. They are regulated by insurance liabilities; so, this is a concern. If it's a matter of convenience for you, then that's another story. Is there a way to get along without a hot plate? If it's for food there are a lot of protein drinks and such that many people use as a source of food and you drink it. There may be other avenues, too. It not for a long duration; so, you may be able to do whatever in a different way from your normal mode.

Let us know what you find out.

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. I have to say, this is confusing. I called the Special Reservations line and asked about a microwave. They said I should call the resort directly about that. I explained that I had done that already, they had said it was no problem, etc., and so he checked our actual reservation and said all our special needs were already on our reservation. He specifically said the special needs were noted by the "front desk." So, maybe we're safe on that one? I'm going to call the resort a few days ahead to reconfirm availability of the microwave, as they originally told me to do.

Our medical needs are too complicated to go into, but I'll just say that needing a hot plate/microwave in the room is definitely not for convenience! Believe me, I wish it was!

I'm not trying to start a problem, but OP please know this is a hot topic and receive answers accordingly. If WDW has cleared you, and it sounds like they have, I would not get into this any further. I have dealt with major eating issues with my own kids. Have a great trip!

Special Needs doesn't usually get into things other than accessible rooms, but I knew that they would be able to check the comments for you and make sure there WERE comments about your needs.
I also knew that if there wer no comments, they would know the up to date place to contact to get those things.
Since you now know for sure that it is on your reservation , you should be fine. As Bete mentioned, you CAN get to the front desk directly, but will not be able to call there directly - as she said, it may take some transfers and explaining of why you actually need to speak directly to the front desk.
Yours is a situation where a fax a few days before makes sense; just make it short and to the point with something about special needs in the first line so they don't ignore it ( room assigners at some resorts say they get up to sevral hundred faxes a day - mostly repeatng room location requests).
At check in mention that you had some special needs note on your reservation. Based on other poster's experience, those are on a separate area in the reservatin and don't always get seen. I didn't see what resort you are staying at, but if it is a moderate or deluxe, those rooms all have refrigerators, so you at least won't have to worry about that.
They are small dorm type which may have no freezer compartment or have a small freezer compartment which doesn't keep ice cream solid. Check the temperature - sometimes they are turned way down or are turned so cold that people have posted food froze. This is especially important if you are in a value resort where the refrigerator was just brought it. It even happens in the DVC one and 2 bedroom villas with full kitchens if no one had used the refrigerator for a while.

While these things might not serve all of someone’s special needs, they may be helpful.
Additional suggestions:
Heating Food
  • The Baby Care Center in each park has microwaves that can be used to warm food.
  • Restaurants are not generally allowed to take items brought in by guests into the kitchen for heating. This is according to food safety laws.
  • Some people in the past have asked restaurants for a small pan of hot water and used that to heat their food. This works best with foods that are less solid (like ground or pureed foods).
  • Food courts at the resorts do have microwaves that can be used for heating foods.
Moderate and Deluxe rooms should have a coffeemaker that can be used to heat/boil water. If your room doesn’t have one, you can call Housekeeping to request one after you are in your room.
  • Bring crock pot liners to decrease your need to clean the crock pot. They are like plastic cooking bags that you put in the crockpot when making the food. When you are done, just remove the bag, close it up and toss in the trash to minimize your cleaning time. We’ve used them for parties and picnics and they work well. You can find them in most grocery stores.

Keeping Food Cool
  • You can get ice on request at any Fast Food restaurants. If you have some zip lock bags for ice, this may help you to keep your food colder.
  • At your resort, you can get ice for free at various locations at each resort. Some people have used that ice in a cooler to cool ice packs/cold packs to a colder temperature than they can get in one of the small resort refrigerators.
  • You can pack a collapsable cooler in your luggage and then fill it with ice in zip lock bags at your resort. Replenish the ice morning and night to keep food or ice packs cold. We have an inexpensive bag we bought at Sam’s Club that will keep things frozen for up to 5 hours (that’s what it says, we’ve actually had things frozen solid in it for a longer time).

If you don’t want to make special arrangements, there are Resorts with cooking facilities
  • Disney Vacation Club Studios have a kitchenette with a microwave, coffeepot and undercounter refrigerator. They also have a countertop where a hot plate or crock pot could be placed outside of the bathroom and a sink for cleaning things up.
  • Disney Vacation Club 1,2 bedroom and grand villas have a full size kitchen with a stove, microwave, refrigerator with freezer, sink, dishwasher, coffeepot.
  • Fort Wilderness Cabins have a full kitchen with stove, microwave, etc.
  • Family Suites at All Star Music have a kitchenette similar to the DVC Studios.

I am going to close this thread now because the questions have been asked and answered.

To the OP, I hope everyhing works out well for you. If you send me a PM with information on what happened, I will add it to this thread.
