Does anyone have any suggestions on using miralax for pre surgery bowel prep or any other particularly effective method not using massive amounts of liquid laxitives?
Truthfully i'm trying to avoid liquid laxitives in copious amounts if i can. I'm having surgery for bladder stones, but the surgeon (who is operating on me for the first time) is most likely going to have to cut me open to remove the stones so he wants the bowels nice and clear....

Last time I did bowel prep for surgery I just threw up the liquid, the surgeonn tried putting an NG tube (tube down nose, into tummy) to bipass the gag reflex and i still threw it right up. So massive liquid consumption of any kind is for me out of the question really.

Also the enema he wanted me to do is impossible do to complete paralays and therefore a complete inability to use the anal sphincter muscles to hold an enema for any period of time.

My plan of attack was to :

possibly try the miralax as many many people who have terrible gag reflex, sensitivity, texture issues say they can tolerate it.\

take copius amounts of laxative pills,

eat the foods that make me "blow out" like crazy and then

get on clears starting at least a day before surgery.

what do you all think? suggestsions regarding miralax and how to take it? other suggestions?

Have you actually talked to the surgeon about your issues with the 'normal' bowel prep? He or she might have ideas (or might know who you can talk to for them).

I would suggest trialling Miralax before you need it for the surgery to see how it works for you. I know some people where they take it and a single dose clears them out completely within a few hours. Other people it doesn't have the same effect. It's also something where you can relatively easily and safely take extra, however, I'd check with a doctor about what is safe for you. I really wouldn't combine it with other laxatives without direct medical supervision. And you really need to let your surgeon know that you can't do normal bowel prep and what you will be doing instead.

I know this sounds disgusting but maybe an enema? Miralax isn't a laxative but a relaxer. It can take up to a few days to work.

yes of course i've discussed this with my surgeon. He;s fine with whatever method I use as long as i'm cleared out.

There are pills that you can take instead of the huge amounts of go-lightly (nasty stuff) liquid that your dr can prescribe you - I think they are called Osmocol or something like that. They worked very well for me and I tolerated the pills well.

You also might want to check into magnesium citrate. You can get it in a regular drug store/grocery store. If you chill it first, it tastes like a really flat, slightly salty lemon-lime soda. A bottle is about 12 ounces I believe, taken once usually does the trick. It works much, much better I have found than any OTC laxative, this is usually what ER's will give patients who come in with extreme constipation. Plus it cost around $1.50 or so.

Also, eat lightly for a few days before you have the operation and then do liquids for two days before....that will help too.

Hope this this helps and Good luck!!!!
