Useful information about bedbugs

Ok, I am grossed out now that I know PBH has had bedbug problems

Just because one person reported that they found a bedbug does not mean that there were actually any bedbugs and certainly doesn't mean that there was a problem or is a problem.

Even Disney has had many bedbug issues according to that website. No one is exempt. It isn't from a lack of cleanliness or attentiveness. Bedbugs hitch-hike.

Sounds like this registry is quite dangerous if people can just anonymously message in that they found a bedbug without it being confirmed.

Yea, that's what I was thinking too.

Good grief - next people won't be going to Florida because there are mosquito's, palmetto bugs, cockroaches, fire ants and snakes there. While bed bugs are not nice, neither are any bugs, and people don't stop traveling because of them.

All hotels, clothing stores, upholstered furniture, you car seats etc can all harbor bedbugs. It is nothing to do with the cleaning regime. It is nothing the hotel has much control over either - hotel guests bring the bugs in with them on their clothes or suitcases. I guess they could spray or heat all guests and luggage as they check in :confused3 Reputable hotel chains are well versed in beg bugs and have measures to mitigate them so if there was a problem they have taken care of it. The best way is to use heat.

There are no major health effects of bed bug bites, it is mainly skin rashes and allergic symptoms much like a mosquito bite. However the biggest health effect is the psychological effects it has on people as withnessed here on the Dis both on the Universal and Disney areas.

To fight all biting insects, I drink plenty of alcohol. It doesn't stop them from biting me, but hopefully it'll stop them from finding another victim afterwards, as they suffer from blurred vision and impaired judgement!

lol and all that alcohol makes you unaware that you are being bitten too! I think this is the perfect solution. :lmao:

hehehe!! I will have to remember that bug repellant! :rotfl:

I did not post this to freak people out. The news has been all over bed bugs and when I looked at the list I did not think that many hotels in the Orlando area were affected.

okay folks --Heat Kills Bed Bugs!

TIP--Put your luggage in a bag and leave in your car. It is very hot in Orlando so you can just cook them before you get home and you will NOT have a problem. Seems simple enough to me. :thumbsup2

patster734 - I will start drinking the minute I arrive to help with the bug problem. Thanks for the tip!

Yea, bed bugs are definitely in the news. My wife was asking me about any reports of bed bugs at the RPR, as we'll be staying there in a couple of weeks.

Bed bugs have been an issue in the big cities for several YEARS now.

The rest of the country is just starting to hear about it because the news has nothing else to talk about.

In the end it does not matter how clean or unclean the hotel is, they can get bed bugs.
The Park Plaza in Boston had issues a few years ago.
They come in with the guests.

Anyway check the room when you get there and leave your stuff in your bags.

haha..that's hysterical!

Thanks for that registry information though.Although it seems dangerous it still is good to know.I'm getting itchy just thinking about it..

BTW there are so many hotels with this problem...like previously stated it isn't even a matter of cleanliness or not.

Here is some useful information:

Before booking a hotel room, you may want to read user reviews of the particular hotel and location — frequently, guests who’ve had bug problems report them online. Bear in mind that a report about one hotel does not mean the issue wasn’t isolated to one room, or that hotel management hasn’t since exterminated.

Still concerned? Concerned travelers may want to check their bed for telltale signs of the bugs, a more common practice years ago. Before jumping into bed, here are a few spot check tips:

* Peel back the bedsheets and check the mattress, running your fingers along the upper and lower seams. Make sure to check the mattress tag, bed bugs often hide there.
* Experts recommend removing and examining the headboard if possible. Check for tiny black spots (excrement) that are smaller than poppy seeds. You may also see translucent light brown skins or, in the case of an infestation— live bugs.
* Check the bedside table. Look for signs of bed bugs in the drawers and along the wall on the side of the bed that is less likely to be disturbed by cleaning staff and guests.
* You may want to elevate suitcases and keep them off the floor, like on a luggage stand.
* If you see powder in the drawers or on the headboard, it is likely that the room has already been treated for bed bugs by an exterminator.
* If bed bugs are detected, travelers should request for another room. Be sure to inform hotel management.
* Just moving to a different room may not be the total answer. You should repeat the thorough inspection of any new or different room you are offered.
* When you pack to leave, inspect your luggage carefully first, and inspect every item as you pack to help detect any bugs or their signs. Laundering most cloth items with typical hot water and detergent followed by drying on low heat for at least 20 minutes (or standard dry cleaning) should kill all bed bugs in or on such items. Sealing freshly-laundered items inside a plastic bag should help keep any more bed bugs from getting in those items later to hide (and be carried back with you).

As gross as it is ,you can never be too careful and it is a problem EVERYWHERE!We have to just be a bit more careful when traveling now. Also ,most good hotels will investigate any possible problems and they usually have bed bugs specialists that they call in right away.

For the record, we did not encounter any bed bugs at the RPR this past week. However, as a precaution, I did drink alcohol.

Just got back! I used this remedy and it works! I did not see one single bed bug! :rotfl2:

Thanks patster734 for the useful tip!

for the record, at my FIL's, PBH & DoubleTree last weekend.....I checked all 3 for bedbugs and didn't find a 1. (not that I expect any of you to stay at my FILs  )

Altho, the mattress at PBH did have a 'replacement' date on it. Guess it's changed every 'so often'? :confused3

I'm going to be hitting 4 hotels on this Orlando trip, and I'm going to check each bed! First time. This whole thing has me itching. LOL.
