I am trying to consider everything before we buy Disney Vacation Club. What use years are there currently? Old Key West a resort you can buy your timeshare from? What resorts are available?

Thanks for all your help!!

There are 8 possible use year months (there are no Jan, May, July, and Nov use years). You can potentially get any of them for any DVC resort. With a resort like OKW, for which new points sold out many years ago, you can get from Disney whatever use year it currently has available for sale via recapturing points through foreclosures or through exercising its right of first refusal in relation to resales by owners. Sometimes in that situation, it does not currently have a particular use year, but you can wait list. For a new resort like VGF, Disney is currently selling to new owners an April or June use year but you can ask for another. However, it cannot sell any pre-April 2013 points for VGF and thus if you ask for anything other than June or April, your first set of points could come in the future rather than time of sale. AKV and Aulani, which are still being sold new, have points from any use year.

The only resorts actively being sold are
1. Hawaii
2. Animal Kingdom
3. Villas at the Grand Floridian

Buying Direct from disney you would have to wait list anything else.

On the resale market you can buy anything. Once you and a seller agree on a price and terms, that will be sent to Disney, who can they match that offer (Right Of First Refusal). If they match that offer, the seller gets his money, and you get nothing. If they pass, the contract is yours.

It is ideal to travel in the beginning of your Use Year.
E.G. If you will go in October for Food&Wine a lot, a June or August UY is good, a December one is bad.

We are currently looking at two BW resales one with a June use year and one with an Oct. use year. If we usually go in Aug. and Jan I think this works okay since they both have carryover and the Oct. one is large enough to cover our Aug. trip or if we go in Jan the Oct. one would cover that with well over half of our Aug. covered and then we would have June for the bal. Does this sound right? I am trying to cover all bases before we make an offer on the two contracts.

:) UY has nothing to do with booking a villa. You can book a villa any time you want as long as you have the points at time of travel.

DH and I travel Oct-Dec...we have a Dec UY (Dec1 of current year to Nov 31 of following year) which is very risky for that travel time. October would be better for us. Because we travel at the end of our UY if we had to cancel a trip less than 30-31 days from check in, those points go into holding. If our canceled trip is say Oct 10-20, then we only have until the end of that Dec UY or Nov 31 to use those points. It is hard to book a trip that time of year on short notice. If our UY were Oct then we would have to the following Sept 31 to book a new trip--because we would be at the beginning of our UY. I hope that makes sense.

Someone will come along shortly and correct me if I am wrong--but that is the importance of UY. I had no clue about UY when we purchased--or I would have asked for October. We have never had to cancel a trip thank goodness and we are not confined to a specific time of travel--so we are OK with Dec thus far.

So if we usually go to Disney they end of May what "Use Month" should 8 get? The May one or July one?

April.

Think about what would happen with a May reservation with a June UY if you needed to cancel. (It would be worse than with an April UY).

There aren't any May UYs but if you usually travel in May, your ideal UY would be April. Like the above poster said UY only becomes an issue if you have to cancel a trip. Ideally you would like to be able to still bank your points (which needs to be done within 8 mths of the beginning of your UY) or have plenty of time to reschedule your trip. I'll try to find a post that will help you. I wish i had read it before purchasing ours but I kept searching the purchasing board for UY help but it gets moved to Mousellaneous I believe.
