Use Year???????

In the resales section what does the column use year mean???
Also, when you buy in resale do you just take over the portion of time left on that time share or do you get the full alotted years you'd get if you bought from Disney??

The use year is the month that you get the total amount of points your contract has. For example, every September 1st, I have a contract where I get 200 points. On September 1, 2003 (my September 2003 use year) I will receive 200 points from DVC that I can use to plan vacation accomodations with.

When you buy a resale (we just did this last month, so this is how I know) you get whatever points are left on the current use year (in our case the resale has an October start date, so we are currently in the October 2002 use year), and then you get the new total amount of points on the first day of the month.

For example the new October use year resale we just bought is a 230 point contract. We closed on it in January 2003. There are 184 points left in the October 2002 use year, which are now ours and we will receive 230 points on October 1, 2003 which will be our October 2003 use year points.

I understand the use year as a "Anniversary date" deal and it's when you accrue your points. But maybe someone can help me understand add-ons and use years? I've heard that you want to have your use year add-on be the same. Why? I'm confused with that. What about add-ons at a different location? Would I still want to have the same use year for those?

DVC itself ceases to exist in 2041. So it doesn't matter when or how you bought your points, it's all over for you then.

We have three contracts - two at BWV and one at VWL - all with September use year. It does make a difference for us in tracking. Makes it much easier as we have the the same member number for all three (even though two were resales). It also makes banking deadlines very simple to calculate.

They are all considered separate contracts for selling purposes, but in the computer both BWV contracts look like one lump sum, so we can use the points across nights and such just as if they were one big contract. But if we ever decided to sell one, we could do so.

For us it was just a convenience issue. The only time you have to match your original use year is if you add on less than 150 points from Disney directly. More than 150 points is considered a new contract and you can do what you want, but less is an add on and they will force you to match it.

It is true that the use year only has to match if doing less than 150 points but it is more difficult if they don't match. I almost got a different resort because of it.

If the use years don't match, you have issues with having to transfer and than dealing with banked pointsl Essentially it is like 2 seperate people owning in Disney's view. (you can't use 10 points from one contract & 12 from another to make the 22 points need for the night). The problem is, and I don;'t underdstand this rule, only 1 transfer per year can occur between 2 members.

Bottom line, in some cases it just gets to confusing and may in the long restrict you even though you own both.
