Are you able to select when your use year is? ie: I would like my points to renew every year in January.

Can I pick or is it based on when the closing is on the timeshare?

You can select a Use Year if that's really important to you, but there are no January, May, July or November Use Years for DVC.

With a resale purchase you will have to accept whatever Use Year is already assigned to the contract. With a purchase thru DVC it might be to your disadvantage to choose some Use Years based on when you are purchasing (and may be best to take the Use Year they are currently selling), but if a specific Use Year is important to you, go ahead and insist.

IMO, Use Year is of little importance unless you are likely to change reservations on short notice. Use Year is simply when your points will renew each year, but it will determine banking deadlines. If you will usually travel in January, a December Use Year would be better than a February Use Year only if you will cancel the reservation after your banking deadline passes, but unless that is a high probability, IMO, either will work.

Enjoy!

Thanks!

I guess now that I think about it - it really wouldn't matter all that much. Its just me being a little dense and trying to get my head around how this all works.

Just remember that UY only means when the points are credited to your account. It means nothing to when you can reserve those reservations. For example. I recently reserved 12/31/05 - 1/10/06. That means I used my 2005 UY points for that 2006 ressie before they were actually in my March UY account. The ressie is from the use year the trip is in and has little to do with the date you actually call.

ahhhh....so the points don't actually have to be there when you make the reservation- as long as they are there when the actual trip itself takes place

that makes much more sense ..lol

That is correct. UY means nothing to when you can call to reserve (always 11 months in advanced at home and 7 at other resort) or when you can go (anytime of year).

The only difference UY makes is if you have to cancel after your banking deadline. If you need to cancel a June reservation in April, it would be nice to know you are still within the banking window to bank those points. That being said, we have been members for nearly 9 years, have had 20+ trips, and have NEVER had to cancel late. I have changed reservations around, and needed to bank or borrow points in the process, but it's never been an issue. In reality, our UY is probably not the best, since it is March, and we usually travel in December/January. We would have to cancel before December 31 to be able to bank our points, and then we could only bank up to 25% of them. Ideally, if you are prone to canceling reservations, you might want a UY just AFTER your usual travel dates rather than before.
