Use year question

We are thinking about finally buying. Can you choose your use year or do you just get it starting the month you buy. For example if i buy now can i get an october use year.

I just joined last month but it's my understanding that your use year corresponds to the month the resort you buy into opened. I bought at Grand Californian and my use year is June.

I just bought in January at AKV and my guide wanted to give me Feb, however I told him I wanted another month. He then gave me the option of just about any month I wanted and I picked June, so yes, you can pick a use year if they have it available.

Sometimes you have to wait a little but if you make it clear your purchase is contigent on getting the UY you want then it appears that they can find the points.

If you are buying in at BLT, AKV, or VGC, I think that all UY's are available. You should be able to get Oct without a problem. UY does not have anything to do with when you buy or when it opened.

Disney does have a specific UY that they offer new buyers, but more for convenience, than anything else. For example, the first one that they started offering everyone for BLT was Feb and for VGC was June.

But, I bought in Feb and got a June UY for BLT because that worked best for me.

I have a December UY on my original 225 pt contract. If I add either 25 or 50 pts sometime this year does that have a Dec UY also? or does it have a different UY? I was just wondering about this the other day.

For BLT, AKV, and SSR, you can definitely get any UY you want if you buy directly from Disney. And you can probably get any of the 8 UYs for the other DVC resorts, as well. Disney usually has a specific UY that it sells for each resort, and if a buyer doesn't request a UY, it will sell the buyer the "default" UY. You just need to let your Guide know that you want October as your UY.

If you add-on through Disney, it will have the same UY as your existing master contract. In fact, if you actually want a different UY, Disney will require that you buy a new master contract.

You should buy the UY that works best for your vacation patterns. Disney doesn't go out of their way to let you know that you can get any UY you want.

Only after loosing points to an unexpected change of plans do you fully appreciate the importance of selecting the correct UY.

Also, if you are buying through Disney, keep in mind that some UYs will allow you to receive 2009 and 2010 points.
