DVC relative newbie here:
I am planning on purchasing VDH soon. I typically vacation in February, so I would like a Dec use year. Is buying now probably too late for that? What happens if I want that use year and buy now? First, is it possible to purchase direct and select your use year. Second, if I were to purchase now and get a Dec yr (assuming this years are sold out), would I not get my points until next Dec?
Thanks for the help in advance!

1. It is not too late to buy that
2. Not sure what you mean.. you’ll get your points for this year
3. You can choose your UY although your guide may give you some pushback
4. They definitely still have Dec UY points lol

They will encourage new buyers to choose a specific UY they are pushing but when you tell them you have a specific reason for one, they will get it for you.

Just tell them you know it might need supervisor approval.

Your first set of points for VDH are 2023 points as it is opening this year. That is what you will get to start.

There is zero chance that Dec UR is sold out at VDH, you will get your pick of UR and if any guide tells you otherwise, that's just shady sales tactics to hit their internal bonus, VDH hasn't even opened yet much less be anywhere close to fully declared. You will also get your points this December.

Just another point if you ever want to buy resale. My experience is there are more contracts to choose from with a December use year.

I would normally chose resale, but I am on the west coast so most of my trips will be to DL, but I want to be able to go to WDW every few years. So unfortunately the resale restrictions make resale not good for me. Unless I'm missing something?

We have 150 direct at VGF. We took advantage of the great summer special and have the advantage of having the Blue Card and booking at all resorts with those points. We also have an AKV and SSR contract we purchased resale. We go in the off seasons so we have a pool of points we can use at the 7 month window that were about 60% of the cost of the direct points and we can use those at the 14 original resorts. You can always book at the home resorts 11 months out and modify 7 months out to one of the 14 original resorts. Keep in mind once you book in a particular use year all of the points you used to book are locked into that use year weather current or borrowed. Sounds like you definitely need the 11 month window for DL. The DW trips all depend on the season you visit and where you like to stay. We are going at the end of January and made our reservations right at the 7 month window. We used the VGF direct points for the Rivera since we could not use our resale point on the Rivera. We used banked points from the AKV contract to book the VGF.

It can be very complicated but well worth the savings once you learn the ins and outs.

We live about an hour from DL and go fairly often, and I love the Grand Californian BUT we do not own at the CA properties because we would almost never plan a DL trip more than a few months in advance so home resort booking doesn’t help. We didn’t want to pay the huge price premium (VGC) or commit to the walk through Downtown Disneyland (VDH), especially when we could get VGF direct at $161. Just food for thought as you make your decision—we might have bought VDH if it was less than VGF…and I think we might yet buy it resale in 2-3 years if they actually break ground on Disneyland Forward.

Yeah, I don't live near Disneyland (Seattle) and plan my vacations for the same time every year because of my kids breaks, so I think it makes sense to do VDH.
