Is there a use year that's "better" than another, or is it based upon personal preferences and travel patterns? Also, is there a use year that seems to be harder to purchase resale than another? My first contract is for June, and would like subsequent contracts to be for June as well....but I'm just not seeing a lot, which has me wondering.

The best UY will be the one that best provides a little insurance against using points which means one that starts just before your preferred travel time. Now if you have different times of the year you travel it may not be possible to have all your travel fall early in your UY so then it's just picking out whichever you feel will work best.

However, since you already have a June UY it's usually best and easiest to stay with the same one.

There is minor variation in the # of contracts DVD sells for a given UY at the resorts and minor variation in the future availability, I don't think there's enough difference (or a good enough pattern) to make any real difference. IMO, buying the best UY for one's travel patterns is by far the more important option. UY choice can be worth as much as a full years worth of points for more. For those where UY doesn't make much difference, they just need to know they're taking more risk and take this into account as part of their purchase decision. It's unlikely this issue will be make or break as to whether to buy for most but it might for some. I would not make a purchase based on potential future add on options in terms of UY but I would realize that certain size contracts and certain resorts might have limited availability and higher prices. For example, if I were looking at 100 points now and 50-75 in a year at the same resort or 2 or one a difficult to get resort like BCV or VGF, I'd just buy the full size contract now because of price and availability specifics. One will have more options on a larger/older resort.

Since you can only bank your points during the first 8 months of your UY, picking a UY that starts just prior to your favorite months of vacation will allow you to bank your points should you have to cancel your reservation.

Like others have said it is best to have a use year just prior to your normal travel time. However many people travel at different times which makes use year choice more difficult. However, if you know you will most likely not travel at certain times of the year, you can pick a use year just after that period of time. In our case we have do our annual trip to WDW during Christmas holidays. We may one day go sometime Jan through May. We KNOW we will not go July, Aug, Sept so for us a use year of December is best. This makes our banking deadline July 31st and will limit any loss of points due to a potential last minute cancellation. An October use year would have worked for us as well as it would have a May 31st banking deadline.
