We just closed on a VWL resale with a Dec use year. There were 92 points left for 2012 and we are using 60 of them next month. When do I need to bank the remaining 32 points so as not to lose them? Second question: we want to get a 2 bedroom villa for a July 2014 vacation. We will need our 2013 points and some 2014 points. With a Dec use year can we make our 2014 reservation in Aug 2013 and use the 2013 and some 2014 points keeping in mind that we have a Dec use year? I am sooooo confused bcs when I made the reservation with the 2012 points the agent said I was borrowing my 2012 points due to the Dec use year. Can some one please explain this in a way a non math person can understand??? Thank you.

your dec 2012 UY runs from dec 1, 2012 to nov 30, 2013. (you are currently in your 2011 UY).

you can bank current pts within 8 months of the start of your UY, so you'd have to bank 2012 pts by july 31, 2013.

UY has nothing to do with booking. nothing at all.

a july 2014 vacation is in your 2013 UY (which runs from dec 1, 2013 to nov 30, 2014.) when you call in aug 2013 to book your home resort for july 2014, you have access to banked 2012 pts (if any) + current 2013 pts (current based on dates of stay, not when you call) + borrowed 2014 pts (if needed.)

stop looking at the actual calendar and create a UY calendar on a piece of paper. as stated above, your 2012 UY is mostly in calendar year 2013. so you need to separate the two.

more coaching on UY is available here if you need it:

If you really meant your Dec 2011 points (good through Nov 30, 2012, rather than your "2012" points (which don't actually come until Dec 1, 2012), then your time for banking into your Dec 2012 use year (which begins Dec 1, 2012 and runs to Nov 30, 2013) is by no later than July 31, 2012.

When you go to make a reservatiln for July 2013 by calling in August 2012, you will be able to use points from Dec 2011 (if banked by July 2012), from Dec 2012 (those will be your "current use year" points for that trip), and you could borrow if needed points from your Dec 2013 use year.

When referring to poonts in a use year you always refer to them in the month and year issue. Thus, you are currently in your Dec 2011 use year not Dec 2012.

It sounds as if what you had was Dec 2012 points which you have already borrowed and don't have any Dec 2011 points left and only have 30 Dec 2012 points left, and thus all you will be able to do is use those and bnorrow points from Dec 2013 when you call in Aug to make that July 2013 reservation, but I cannot actually tell exactly what has occurred in your situation.

I have a Dec UY and it takes a while to get used to. Your 2012 points are good for stays between 12/01/12 and 11/30/13, so you did have to borrow them to stay in August 2012. You will need to bank any remaining 2012 points by 07/31/13. Your July 2014 trip would fall in your 2013 Use Year so you could use banked 2012 points and borrow from 2014 if you need to.

Makes complete sense, doesn't it? ;)

I am going to print this all out and set it up so I can get my head around this. Thank you so much.

Charles,
Thanks for the info and pep talk. I think I am getting it. It is the Dec. portion which is throwing me for a loop.

Rob S. Thanks for the specifics about a Dec. use year. It is a bit confusing, but I did print out the replies and now will study the dates.
