use of holding points and reallocate

I have a reservation at the end of August and one in early October. The August one is still tentative.

Tomorrow is the last day that I can cancel the August reservation. If I cancel past tomorrow the points come back as holding points.

I can only book reservations within 60 days with holding points, so I thought worse case if I have to cancel the August one, I can apply to points at the 60 day mark to the October reservation and get the October reservation points back.

A MS rep told me this was a no-go because in order to do this I would have to cancel and re-book using the holding points and at this point in time there is no availability for what I currently have reserved. I thought maybe they could reallocate the points like they do for banked/borrowed/regular. Is this right that I can't reallocate using holding points?

Yes, what they have told you is correct. You can only use it for reservations that are available at 60 days out. If your dates in October are not available at the time then you can't have holding points used for a reservation.

You end up with holding points if you cancel at the last minute. The penalty you pay is that those points can only be used for something available on short notice, no more than 60 days in advance of check-in. You made your October reservation more than 60 days in advance so it wouldn't be within the rules to allow you to substitute holding points into that existing reservation.

You can only reallocate with like points. If it is a home resort reservation made between 7 and 11 months, you cannot reallocate with non-home resort points if there is no current availability. Same with holding points.
