Use caution if choosing Avis for your car rental

Don't rent from Avis Car Rental. I recently did for our Disney trip and they added $171 to my bill without my knowledge. The clerk at the desk added insurance and other extras to the contract even though I clearly said no to all the extras they were pushing on me. The clerk said ok, told me what boxes to check and sign on the screen which unbeknownst to me included the very extras I declined. THEY MISREPRESENTED THE CONTRACT TO ME. When I found the charges on my credit card bill, Avis refused to correct the mistake because it appears on an obscure line of the contract. I have since heard of many other similar complaints on Avis.

Don't rent from Avis. If you do not take my advice, then make sure you carefully examine every line of their confusing contracts to ensure they have not snuck in additional charges that you didn't want. This happened at the Avis in Orlando airport, but after dealing with their customer service department for three weeks, I would caution against choosing Avis anywhere.

I'm sorry if you had a bad experience; maybe next time you should read the contract before signing. You have no one to blame but yourself.

I have rented with Avis many times, both in the US and Europe, with no problems.

This should be easy to remedy. When you decline coverage, you need to initial saying you decline. So, just show them your copy of the contract with your initials declining everything and you should be good.

I have always had good experiences with Avis.

This scenario happens with any car rental company, not just Avis. The customer verbally declines all extras. The agent hastily sets up the rental contract and either intentially or unintentially sets up the contract incorrectly. The customer signs without looking. This happens all the time. Dont let the agent rush you. Take a few minutes to review before you initial the box.

I agree that I should have and now certainly wish I did scrutinize the contract more carefully but the fact remains that I declined it to the clerk which he acknowledged and directed me where to click and sign for what I understood to be the contract that I wanted.

I don't doubt that it is a common thing. I just want to raise awareness to anyone going to the same Avis counter at Orlando airport. When you factor in the inflexibility of their customer service dept afterwards, it seems like it was no accident.
