Yes, Tracfone (and Net10) are pay as you go. You can top up with as much as you want (you buy the vouchers for various values). The more you pay the more minutes you get. Answering and making calls eats your minutes - I think they charge by the whole minute.

Lol, been there, done that!

Yup, unless you want to take the SIM out and use it in a UK phone as the OP did, then the buy and possibly throw away after is definately the simplest solution, then you don't have to worry about any of the GSM vs CDMA stuff, etc.

Yes, the prices vary according to stock and special offers. Where I got mine last week I actually got a better deal in a local store (rather than Walmart).
