Hi, does anyone know whether a usa bought dvd camcorder will work over here?
My nephew intends buying one next week at wal mart, but i'm not so sure it will work back in the uk.
Thanks

I have the same question. I love to know the answer. Thanks to anyone who may know.

If you have a multi region dvd i wouldn't think there would be a problem. The problem will be charging the battery up, you will have an American charger and plug.

Try posting this on the photography board. Someone will answer :thumbsup2

Also, the US system uses NTSC, where we use PAL. If your TV cannot play in the NTSC format (though most modern ones do) you won't be able to view your footage.

The plug problem can be solve with a adapter which they sale here for all over the world. I bought one at Best Buy for around $30.00 and has all the plug adaptors for all the different countries.

Thanks everyone for you answers.

Thanks i have just posted this on there as well!
we have adaptors already for all our american xmas decorations!!

DVD should be fine as it is region free, I thought it was only VHS that is PAL or NTSC. Having said that I often think that having a UK model is better for warranty purposes and to be honest not a great deal of difference in price these days.

The model they have seen is the same in dollars as it is in pounds here!

Which model are you looking at?

Claire ;)

Another thing I have read is that miniDV is still actually better than DVD in terms of picture quality etc. At the moment I am holding out for more HD cameras to be around at this time Sony have only got one for sale!

Claire ;)

I am not sure of the model, they are on virgin atlantic flying over there right now! I'll find out tomorrow which one they wanted.
I agree that the minidv is better, but they want a dvd one!

Just priced up the SONY DVD DCR-DVD505 camcorder on Pixmania it is £554 and on a US website via Amazon.com it is between $774 and $835 so when you add on tax even the $774 price is only £5 cheaper than here.

Claire ;)

I would advise checking here online at say kelkoo for a price comparison before commiting to a purchase in the US as the saving may not be that great.

As i said before, it is the same in dollars as it is in pounds......say for instance it is... $300=£300

I have purchased several bits of electronic equipment in the USA and have never had any problems with things like charging etc. I always just use an adaptor if the saving is that good.

Netty,

It probably will work, I'm just being cautious.

With regards to the power, what you'll most likely find is you'll have an external universal power switching adaptor (now that's a mouthful), that will have a two pin input. My Sony, Canon, Panasonic equipment has these and all you need to do is plug in a UK cable to it. Again though, CHECK before you do. It'll have something like:

INPUT: 100V-240V ~ 50/60Hz

on the back.
