I'm having "mommy brain" at the moment and cannot for the life of me remember what happened...so I turn to my fellow DISers for clarification. When flying from Canada, our first point of US entry will be Seattle where we will have to change planes and then fly non-stop to MCO, where we will be using Magical Express to get to the resort. Question...do i need to clear customs with our checked bags in Seattle, or at our destination (MCO) and then drop the bags back off when we check in at Magical Express? Hope that makes sense?

Neither. You pre-clear customs and immigration before you leave your Canadian airport. If you stick your yellow DME tags on the bags, you don't need to see them again until you get to your WDW resort!

NOTE - there are a few exceptions. Some charter flights and there may be a few small airports. If you do fall under the exception, you'd clear customs and immigration in Seattle.

As long as you are flying from one of the following cities:

  • Calgary, Alta.
  • Edmonton, Alta.
  • Halifax, N.S.
  • Montréal, Que. (Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport only)
  • Ottawa, Ont.
  • Toronto, Ont. (Toronto Pearson International Airport only)
  • Vancouver, B.C.
  • Winnipeg, Man.

You will clear U.S. Customs at the airport before departure. As such, you wouldn't need to do so in the United States, and can proceed as if you were on a domestic flight.

Otherwise, you would need to clear Customs with your baggage at Seattle. Either way, you don't need to claim your bags in Orlando.

Depends on your departure point in Canada. A number of Canadian airports have facilities that allow you to clear U.S. customs in Canada, including Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa (not sure about other cities). Other airports do not have this facility, in which case you would have to clear U.S. customs at your first U.S. destination, Seattle. You can check with your T.A. or with your airline and find out where you clear customs. Alternately check the Canadian airport's website.

Thank you all for such a quick response! I will be flying from Vancouver so it looks like I'll be clearing customs there. Again, much pixie dust to you all!
