Just wondering if anyone had a US bank account so you can transfer money when exchange rate is good etc?

Not sure if UK folks can get a dollar account but wondered if anyone had looked into this before?

I don't know if UK folks can do this, I'd of thought you need a social sercurity number. The best thing to do to get the best exhange rate when paying for purchases over the counter, such as hotel bills, restuarants etc.. is to use a comission free Credit Card, such as the Halifax or Nationwide one.

Yes you can .... We have a sun trust account opened in Florida a few trips back .... Need to keep $500 in there to qualify for free banking though

We also have a SunTrust account - need to open it in person whilst in FL. We have it mainly to pay our DVC dues.

when I worked for a bank it used to cost a fair bit to transfer money to USD accounts by which ever means you wanted to. It doesn't seem very cost effective if its just for use a spending money when in the USA...

I have an account with TD bank in Florida. I always get a bank draft and always get a better rate dollar than just changing it for cash. I have a visa debit card so always handy when out shopping ect :)

we have a suntrust acc too. opened a few years ago whilst we were over there.
we use it for DVC dues too but I do try to transfer little bits when the exchange rate is good.

I use XE trade for my transfers.. no costs that i have seen and the rates are usually pretty good.:goodvibes

From memory a PayPal transfer was a cheaper option than the bank

Transferring money in and out of Paypal is free (unless you pay for the express clearing option) whether it's a UK or US account though like most companies they get their cut on the difference between their exchange rates ant the interbank ones.

That's how I get money into my Suntrust account. I'm assuming I'm with the same branch as everyone else who's posted, the one opposite DTD. :)

We were staying on the Us27 at the time so ours was opened at the one just in front of Publix is it called "The Berry something or other"? There's an Applebee's there too

Also got a sun trust account which I put dollars into on a monthly basis but I just use it to pay my DVC dues, although I could make withdrawals if I wanted to.
