I just tried to book an award ticket from PHL to MCO with US Airways. It used to be you only needed 25,000 miles for a round trip ticket to anywhere within the continental US. When I went to book, they want to charge me 25,000 miles for the departure flight and 12,500 miles for the return! When did they start this?

The flights for 12,500 miles are very hard to get, especially to a popular destination. There are only a few seats per flight. If they are soldout for 12,500, you can get them at the next level, which is 25,000 (per flight). Many times for 25,000 (per flight) you can get first class. What dates are you trying to get?

I'm not trying to get a flight for 12,500 miles. I'm trying to redeem a round trip ticket from PHL to MCO which should be 25,000 miles. I've done this many times without a problem. This time, they want 25k miles one way. Something is wrong.

When you book award travel on their website, you select each way and the number of miles required for each flight is on the left. 12,500 one way x 2 = 25,000 roundtrip. Again, the 12,500 one way is very difficult to get. If it's not available, then they offer it at 25,000 one way. This is the way the program works, nothing is wrong. See the link to the award chart. You are looking for a "mileage saver" ticket. It is not available for the departure flight you selected.

You are probably thinking of redeeming your ticket the same way that I would expect to redeem it. But now with the merger, they have changed the way you redeem your miles. Instead of telling you that the flight you want is unavailable for 25K round trip, you can get the next level of redemption for one way of the trip and the lower level for the other portion of the trip. So instead of having to get your flight on the next level for 50K miles with the old system, you can get it for 37.5K miles if you cant get both ways for the total of 25K.

Sorry if I confused you but I tried to explain it as best I could. I understand what they did, I hope you did as well.

As other have mentioned US Airways is doing it correctly. You have an option instead of being told there is no flights available.
